Job description

Job Description
At HS2 we offer a two-year rotational graduate programme, providing you with the opportunity to stretch and challenge yourself on the largest infrastructure project in Europe. The HS2 Project Profession Graduate programme has been specifically tailored to build capability and competence in varying aspects of project and programme management. You will gain exposure to a variety of disciplines, whilst in parallel having the opportunity to gain technical qualifications. This will enable you to begin your journey towards becoming a Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) of the Association for Project Management where applicable. This programme is designed around enabling you to get as much experience as possible across the project within a particular business area. We do this through 'on-the-job' training, technical qualifications, supported by technical expertise and Project Management development opportunities. After completion of the 2-year graduate programme graduates will be transferred into a role within the same discipline, but not necessarily the same business area.
We have a total of 8 graduate opportunities available in Birmingham all of which will require travel to various site locations across the HS2 line of route. Graduate opportunities within these placements will be available across a variety of HS2 teams. After the assessment stage, we will assign successful candidates accordingly based on business requirements.
The 6-month rotations across the business will incorporate the following parts of the organisation including: Programme Management Office, Project Delivery, Project Controls, and a self-selected placement.
Programme Management Office placement: The PMO placement in this area will develop your understanding of how consistent standards are developed and deployed to ensure the project is on target to deliver its benefits and that HS2's executive, SLT and external sponsors are provided with accurate, timely and consistent performance updates.
Project Controls placement: The project controls placement in this area will enable you to enact the Project Management standards set out by the PMO and develop an understanding of the interfaces between the controls and delivery teams and the controls and the PMO teams.
Delivery placement: The delivery placement will build your understanding of how projects and programmes deliver in order to achieve the outcomes and benefits they have agreed to within the constraints of time, cost, and quality - the core of what project delivery is all about.
Self-selected placement: The self-selected programme will enable you to choose a placement which focuses on a skill you would like to develop further, or an area you would like to know more about. During this placement you should consider where you feel you have skills / knowledge gaps and find a placement to bridge this gap.
About You:
Skills:
  • Planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and deliver day to day tasks
  • Ability to coordinate and deliver multiple tasks and responsibilities in accordance with agreed deadlines
  • Communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders
  • Ability to understand complex issues to carry out problem solving
  • Ability to work collaboratively across a multidisciplinary team and with stakeholders

Knowledge:
  • 2:2 Bachelor's degree (or non-UK equivalent) in any discipline
  • IT knowledge including; Word, Excel, PowerPoint or equivalent

Does HS2 offer sponsorship if I do not have the Right to Work in the UK?
To be eligible to apply to the HS2 Graduate scheme for our September 2024 in-take, any applicant will need to already have the on-going Right to Work in the UK, that is not time-bound in any way. Please note, unfortunately due to the 2 year time-bound restrictions of the Post Study/Graduate Work visa, we are unable to accept any applicants who have this visa as this is an ongoing permanent role that will carry on beyond the initial 2 year graduate programme.
Due to the nature of our organization, HS2 are not able to sponsor any applications as we do not hold the required sponsorship license from the UK Home Office and candidates are not allowed to sponsor themselves.
We appreciate the Right to Work question can be complex to understand, so if you are unsure of your Right to Work status in the UK, please email us at and we will be happy to advise further. Please note, to enable HS2 to comply with UK Home Office policy, your Right to Work status will be checked early in the recruitment process.
