Based: North East Surrey Crematorium
Salary: £29,480 per annum
Contract: Permanent, Full Time
Role Overview
- We are looking for a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual to supervise and work alongside a small team carrying out gardening duties and assisting in the day to day running of the crematorium service.
- Reporting to the Bereavement Services Manager, you will be responsible for organising the work team carrying out gardening duties in the gardens of remembrance and around the crematorium buildings and acting as an ambassador of our service to visitors to the grounds. You will also be assisting the crematorium team with light maintenance and cleaning.
- You should have proven experience of gardening and working in a public place. Any qualification in horticulture and experience and/or training in maintenance will be an advantage.
- You will be dealing with the bereaved in often stressful circumstances; it is therefore essential that you have a high level of empathy and good communication and customer care skills.
Job Purpose
- Responsible to the Bereavement Services Manager for all grounds maintenance operations, procedures and duties relating to the gardens to ensure the professional management of North East Surrey crematorium.
- Working closely with colleagues and especially Crematorium Supervisor to ensure overall efficient running of site.
- Responsible for the day to day supervision of 2 gardeners in all duties attached to the Gardens of Remembrance, or when instructed, various duties within the crematorium building, and to cover other members of staff during periods of sickness, holidays etc.
- Responsible for the locking and unlocking of gardener’s sheds and yard and upholding the general security of the buildings, acting as a key holder as required.
- The ability to undertake manual handling duties.
- Ensures that routine daily maintenance of equipment is carried out and that it is completed in accordance with any directives as laid down by the equipment suppliers/manufacturers.
- Ensures that cremated remains are properly identified in accordance with crematorium procedures, and disposed of in accordance with written instructions including recording the location of the ashes in the Garden of Remembrance.
- Liaise with members of the public on memorials and locations within the gardens, selection of roses and ashes interments.
- Ensures that each gardener wears appropriate clothing at all times when on duty, paying particular attention to cleanliness and neatness of attire and that relevant PPE is used.
- Ensure that all details of repairs necessary to the gardens and equipment are promptly reported to the relevant department for appropriate attention and that sufficient stocks of tools, equipment and materials necessary for the performance of the services are maintained and available.
- Ensures that all staff adopt a sympathetic and tactful approach to bereaved relatives, assisting them in any way possible.
- Ensures that all areas of the gardens and related areas are cleaned to a good standard. Regularly checking the Gardens of Remembrance are kept clear of personal memorabilia such as vases, ornaments etc.
- Prepared to work additional hours as necessary. Additional hours to be taken as toil in agreement with the Bereavement Services Manager.
- Assists with preparation and attends the Annual Memorial Service held at NESC. Also to support the “one enable” programme by marshalling at Battersea Fireworks night and helping with one other event per year.
- Responsible for carrying out 1-1 meetings with all direct reports, helping set objectives and identifying and providing training and development for staff to meet the requirements of their jobs.
- Responsible for the evaluation, implementation and compliance with Health and Safety legislation, to ensure safe working practices of all staff, public and contractors in his/her working environment, in accordance with departmental safety arrangements, policies and codes.
