Job Introduction
Media Operations is at the heart of teams delivering incredible content across all our platforms for all audiences. Our team are experts in their field bringing exceptional technical, operational and production creativity to everything they do.
Media Operations manages the craft and production operations for the BBC's news, radio, and sport services across London, Salford, and Birmingham - capturing, editing, and producing our output 24x7 for TV, radio, and online. The team is also responsible for the management of production services, stores, some audio, fleet, and OB bases in England.
Working closely together with our news, sport, and content colleagues, we co-create all content reaching millions of people across the UK and the World daily.
Main Responsibilities
This role will be part of the leadership team for Media Operations and will report to the Director. With overall responsibility for 250-350 staff, this role will lead the successful operation of all our studio operations and other facilities across our London broadcast estate. The post holder will:

  • Be accountable for operational excellence and delivery across daily and weekly output from all of our London sites across audio, television, digital and across all genre including news.
  • Maintain a close and trusted working relationship with a range of staff across multiple areas: with senior leaders across the Technology Group, with senior stakeholders in the content divisions, senior stakeholder in the News and with third party suppliers
  • Work in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders across the business to define strategy and priorities
  • Be an inspiring operational leader, with a real passion for your craft and a superb understanding of the range of our editorial ambitions and will constantly strive for excellence
  • Ensure that fluid and creative conversations take place across all our content creating divisions ensuring creative excellence, the highest editorial standards and service aspirations are met and exceeded
  • Foster a diverse, supportive, and inclusive culture where our front-line operational staff are developed to perform at their best
  • Responsible, with other members of the Media Operations leadership team, for the prioritisation and allocation of resources and budgets to meet the business's priorities within the budget available.
  • Lead and innovate in the development of operational workflows to maximise the use of existing and innovative technology, collaborating with senior colleagues in both production and editorial areas as well as technology and in the wider BBC

Are You The Right Candidate?

  • Demonstrable experience of 2nd line leadership of a large team with experience of successfully advocating D&I (diversity & inclusion) initiatives
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a complex matrix environment managing multiple stakeholder
  • Demonstrable experience of managing complex technological spaces such as studios - TV and Radio
  • Demonstrable work experience in either an editorial or operational role
  • Demonstrable experience of working with 3rd parties such as suppliers, contributors or technological partners
  • Demonstrable experience of resource scheduling including people, spaces and technology
  • Demonstrable experience of managing large complex budgets
  • Experience of managing large studio environments and the necessary H&S requirements therein
  • Demonstrable strong financial skills with a very good understanding of budget management
  • Demonstrable evidence of managing large teams across multiple bases
