Job Title: Head of Engineering, Power-to-Liquids E-Fuels Startup
Location: Remote (initially)
Salary: Competitive, subject to experience, with generous equity options
Start date: Flexible
Are you a hands-on team player with at least 10 years of experience working in the sustainable engineering or petrochemical sector? If so, we want to welcome you to the Carbon Neutral Fuels team as our Head of Engineering! Your role will be to lead the design and development of our modular e-fuels system.
About Carbon Neutral Fuels
We are an early stage startup pioneering a modular e-fuel production system that can be mass manufactured at the scale needed to make a meaningful contribution to solving climate change. As a carbon neutral drop-in replacement for fossil fuels, e-fuels enable rapid decarbonisation in hard to electrify industries such as aviation and long-distance transport.
We are looking to build an inclusive, engaging team of makers that enjoy solving complex problems, who are aligned in our vision of creating a better future for tomorrow. We are proud supporters of The Better Business Act, The Women’s Engineering Society, The Better Business Network and Support the Goals. CNF is also an accredited Living Wage Employer and a Disability Confident Employer. You can read our Environmental Policy and our Equality and Equity policy on our website.
You will be joining us at the beginning of our journey. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in the relatively new field of sustainable synthetic liquid fuels.
The opportunity
In this role, you will be tasked with leading the development of our modular e-fuels system, integrating technologies in a way that can ultimately be mass-manufactured at scale. Initially this will involve being the primary point of contact with our engineering partner, whilst laying the foundations for you to build a cross-functional internal design team comprising Process, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers later in 2024.
You will have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an Engineering discipline and have experience across the product development lifecycle. Safety expertise is critical and familiarity with manufacturing and petrochemical processes being advantageous.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge green technologies, such as Direct Air Capture (DAC), renewable and low carbon energy, electrolysis/hydrogen and Fischer-Tropsch reactors.

- Building an inclusive, welcoming and engaging company culture
Personal Qualities
- You must have a Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Project Management, or a similar discipline
- You must have at least 10 years relevant industry experience in managing complex projects through to completion
- A customer-centric commercial mindset with the ability to confidently communicate with multiple stakeholders and the supply chain
- Be confident in leading and motivating a team of skilled individuals to deliver on project outcomes
- Experience with petrochemical systems and processes (e.g. syngas, hydrocarbons, etc)
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes is extremely advantageous
- A keen interest in climate change, sustainability and responsible business practices
Also desirable
- Safety design and compliance advantageous (e.g. HAZOP/HAZID, LOPA, etc)
- Experience working with electrical and control systems
- Expertise with CAD including SolidWorks
