The Role
LIBRTI (Lithium Breeding Tritium Innovation) is a newly launched, £200m Programme under UKAEA's Fusion Futures, the programme aims to establish a pioneering facility for demonstrating tritium breeding feasibility in fusion powerplants. Focused on a 14 MeV neutron source, the facility will allow iterative installations of breeder mock-up experiments (solid and liquid breeders) at scales facilitating direct visibility to commercialise breeder designs. Despite an ambitious 4-year timeline, the programme anticipates establishing a Culham Campus testbed with feeder experiments extending into the next decade.
Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team to shape the future of fusion energy. As Head of LIBRTI Engineering , you will serve as a senior line and technical manager for all engineering activities, exercising design judgment in selecting experiments alongside LIBRTI's Director and Head of Science. Responsibilities include final approval and technical oversight of all LIBRTI builds, from conception to decommissioning. The incumbent will be a senior UKAEA representative, a chartered engineer, capable of international collaboration with STEM leaders in the fusion community, and well-versed in fusion device engineering.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Lead engineering resources for LIBRTI experiments, providing senior management and technical guidance while promoting coaching and upskilling.
  • Serve as a technical consultant for other UKAEA programs, emphasising integrated/systems engineering approaches.
  • Formulate and execute strategies for valuable Intellectual Property in breeding, covering LIBRTI's patent vs know-how strategy and supporting spinouts.
  • Foster cross-UKAEA expertise through the 'Fellows' stream, gaining deep knowledge in non-LIBRTI areas like plasma science and computing.
  • Promote UKAEA internationally, collaborating with global fusion stakeholders, and represent UKAEA at conferences and trade fairs.
  • Contribute to external bodies as an expert and actively develop the LIBRTI program portfolio by initiating experiments with international partners and securing funding from various sources.

  • Expert level knowledge in at least one of the following: tokamak devices / superconducting magnets / high heat regime builds / neutron generators / tritium fuel cycles.
  • Proven ability to interact efficiently with people in a variety of different situations.
  • Proven track record of building relationships, networks, and collaborations with industry and academia.
