Head of Nursing

Job Summary: The postholder works across the Screening Division supporting the Director of Screening and Consultants in Public health to achieve excellence in Nursing and Midwifery practice. The Head of Nursing for Screening will be responsible for providing professional and clinical leadership, leading on and supporting quality assurance and quality improvement, as well as the delivery and monitoring of clinical and professional standards, working in conjunction with the Heads of Programme. The Head of Nursing will take the lead on Duty of Quality, quality improvement, service user experience, infection prevention and control, safeguarding, consent, clinical supervision, staff vaccination, occupational health across the division. The Head of Nursing will be a highly visible, proactive and accessible leader, acting as a clinical resource and assuring the sustained delivery of high standards of Nursing care and service delivery, to nursing staff, service users and the public. Key Relationships: The post holders primary relationships are with the Director of Screening, Consultants in Public Health, Heads of Line and Heads of Programme. The Head of Nursing will have line management responsibilities for the Breast Care Nursing teams across Wales and for the divisional Health, Safety, Risk and Governance manager. They will have regular contact with a diverse range of multidisciplinary team members in all the Screening Programmes. The post holder will also have a significant amount of contact with the Director of Nursing and her team members and senior nursing professionals across the organisation. JOB PURPOSE To act as the professional lead for all nurses and midwives in the Screening Division registered with the NMC, ensuring governance systems for compliance. To ensure nurses and midwives maintain their registration status and complete all requirements for revalidation. To ensure that professional nursing and midwifery standards are maintained within the Screening Division, and address areas where these standards are compromised. To lead on the divisional approach to the Duty of Quality and provide assurance to the Senior Management Team. Line managing the Health, Safety, Risk and Governance Manager and working closely with PHW Health and Safety Staff, Quality Nursing and Allied Health Professionals division and the business team to define their objectives. Manage and lead identified groups of staff and provide professional leadership to others where appropriate as the screening division expands. To work closely with the Heads of Programme to ensure nurses and midwives within the team work to the highest standards for the benefit of the programme and the population. To oversee budgets for the Breast Care nursing teams. To participate in staff reviews for registered nurses and midwives not directly managed and lead on the reviews for those line managed. To act upon any professional issues, concerns or related risks and raise as appropriate with the Director of Nursing. Taking a lead for the Screening Division on topics including safeguarding, Consent, Service User Experience and Infection Prevention and Control, interpreting national guidance and informing screening policy, as well as acting as the screening representative for these topics at an organisational level. To represent Screening Nursing and Midwifery views in the wider Public Health Wales organisation and within Health Boards.
