Head of TowerHamlets Arts & Music Education Service (THAMES)
Role Purpose
Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education Service (THAMES) is seeking an experienced and inspirational senior manager to lead the service within its current context as the Lead Organisation for the Tower Hamlets and City of London Music Education Hub and within the new London East Music Hub model from September 2024.
The Head of Service will line manage a team of five managers and over 100 tutors to ensure continued success in delivering an inclusive and exciting programme of music and arts reaching over 14,000 children and young people in Tower Hamlets each week. The successful candidate will take the lead in setting the long-term delivery model, direction, and ambition for the service, working with over 100 schools and other educational settings and in partnership with a wide range of local and national cultural partners, council officers, and other external agencies and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities and Requirements
The Head of Service will ensure that all music and arts programmes provided by THAMES and its partners are of the highest quality and that all children and young people can take part and make good progress.
The role requires excellent musicianship and teaching skills as well as an interest and knowledge of cross-arts subjects, which are offered by THAMES as part of its extensive projects programme.
The Head of Service will also support music-making activities and curriculum development in schools by providing high quality advice and guidance, including through oversight of relevant CPD programmes for all staff.
The Head of Service will oversee budgets and ensure that THAMES remains financially secure, including pursuing and developing new funding streams.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to write well, produce reports and present to various audiences is essential.
The postholder will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check on appointment and every three years thereafter.

THAMES is part of London Borough of Tower Hamlets Children’s Services and the Head of THAMES reports directly to the Director, Commissioning and Youth.
The THAMES management team is supported by two Business Support officers (FTE)
The current post holder is retiring in August 2024 and the post will commence from 1st September 2024.
