Contract: Permanent, full-time.

We are excited to announce an opportunity for an exceptional, talented and motivated individual to become the next Headteacher of Whalley Range High School in Manchester, following the retirement of the current postholder, Mrs Fahey.

This is a vital appointment for our large, inclusive, influential, award-winning, Ofsted ‘Good’ 11-18 Girls’ School. Greater Manchester Education Trust understands that the best Headteachers need autonomy, but within a framework of shared good practice and system leadership. Our Headteachers all contribute enormously to the success of their own schools, but also to the other schools in our high-performing Trust.

About the school:

Whalley Range High School is a popular, oversubscribed, and high performing, multi-cultural, inner-city girls’ comprehensive school, with a thriving Sixth Form. We currently have 1650 students on roll in KS3 and KS4 (11-16) and a further 300 post-16 students in our modern and impressive Sixth Form College. The school is located only two miles from the heart of Manchester city centre, near to Chorlton, Moss Side, Fallowfield, Hulme, West Didsbury and Withington, and is an important part of the Greater Manchester Education Trust, a cluster of schools providing excellent and nurturing education to around 6,000 students in Greater Manchester

The school delivers the highest standard of education for its pupils and is a focal point for its local communities. Examination results are consistently well above national averages. The school was inspected by Ofsted in April 2022 and was judged to be Good in all areas, reflecting and building upon its previous ‘Good’ judgement.

About the role:

Our new headteacher will work proactively with leaders and colleagues in the school, our Trust and more widely to

  • Deliver an excellent education for all.
  • Lead our dedicated, professional staff and students to even greater success.
  • Inspire and influence individuals and teams, with the energy, rigour, and passion to ensure our school remains an outstanding place to learn, as it grows.

This is an exciting opportunity to build on the success of a large, developing, and well-regarded school with excellent facilities and dedicated staff, and also the rare chance to be involved at a senior level in system leadership within our Trust, and to shape future growth in one of the most dynamic cities in the country.

Located in our state-of-the-art modern and carefully preserved Neo-Georgian campus and within easy travelling distance from Manchester’s suburbs and City Centre as well as the Towns and Conurbations of Greater Manchester, Lancashire, North East Cheshire, and South Yorkshire. Connected to the heart of the North West through the motorway network (M62, M60, M61, M67, and M56), we offer an almost unique opportunity for an ambitious Headteacher looking towards Executive Leadership.

About the Trust

Greater Manchester Education Trust is a diverse and inclusive Trust for young people of all backgrounds in Greater Manchester. The Trust is led by a strong and visionary Board of Trustees, with broad experience who are all invested in creating a real educational beacon for the children of our City. The new Headteacher will lead Whalley Range High School and will contribute to the success of our other schools – and in turn receive help, resources, ideas, and strategies from likeminded colleagues leading those schools.

The Trust appoints inspirational leaders, who share our vision for

  • Great schools, where resilient, happy young people flourish.
  • Great teaching, where creative colleagues inspire and excel.
  • Great opportunities, where everyone grows and develops.

Anyone interested in the role is more than welcome to contact our advisers ASDTi on 07736 775776 to arrange a visit to the school, or an informal chat with the Trust CEO, Damian Owen.

Further details and a full application pack are available from our advisers ASDTi by visiting and downloading from www.wrhs.co.uk or by e-mailing gm@asdti.com or calling 07736 775776.

ASDTi are available on our behalf during evenings and weekends as well and would be pleased to discuss your requirements.

Closing date for applications: 11th March 2024 at 10am.

Interviews will be held on 27th and 28th March 2024.

Whalley Range High School and Greater Manchester Education Trust have a strong commitment to Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Successful candidates will be subject to enhanced checks by the Disclosure & Barring Service.
