PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Specialist Duties / Appointed Expert 1.1 To act as a Medical Physics Expert in the Physics of Nuclear Medicine under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 As MPE to provide advice and act in accordance with IRMER Regulation 14. Act as an Operator and carry out practical tasks of medical exposures, under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017. Plan and organise the Quality Assurance programme for all departmental equipment involved in the exposure of patients and staff to ionising radiation to ensure statutory compliance. This will include highly complex, patient critical equipment. Analyse results and provide reports and advice on findings to the relevant senior scientist and to the Trust and users on the safety and efficacy of the use of the equipment. Test highly complex, patient-critical equipment requiring high precision measurements. To plan and manage the local introduction of new national and international Codes of Practice and Guidelines in these fields. To propose policy changes on commissioning and continuing Quality Control tests for equipment. To implement these within the Department, including the documentation of measurement technique and equipment operation instructions and the related staff training. (These changes will also involve other disciplines and departments). Computer processing of complex, non-routine imaging studies. Identify the need for new instrumentation or equipment. Produce specifications for items of equipment, for purchase or construction in-house in conjunction with the relevant Lead Scientist. Other Clinical Scientific This section to include responsibilities for other aspects of clinical scientific work in support of Imaging with Ionising Radiations Act as the Lead Physicist for the Quality Assurance programme for Nuclear Medicine equipment. This will include highly complex, patient critical equipment and involve high precision measurements Analyse results and provide reports and advice on findings to the relevant senior scientist and to the Trust and users on the safety and efficacy of the use of the equipment. Investigate and resolve complex equipment problems. Liaise with suppliers regarding equipment breakdown, and arrange for the maintenance and servicing of identified items of equipment. Conduct complex processing of patient studies - as appropriate to specialism. Assist with the local introduction of new national and international Codes of Practice and Guidelines in these fields. Computer processing of complex, non-routine imaging studies. Assist with the assay, dispensing and administration of radionuclide therapies. Develop and validate and implement new test and analysis methodologies. Develop appropriate documentation and provide training as required. Identify the need for new instrumentation or equipment for use in Clinical & Radiation Physics. Produce specifications for items of equipment, for purchase or construction in-house. Act as an Operator and carry out practical tasks of medical exposures Assist and provide support to the Trust appointed Advisers and Experts (PA/RWA/MPE) in services to the Trust and other customers Planning the protection and radiation safety features required for new installations and medical procedures. Audit of compliance with radiation protection legislation. Risk assessment and management of risk. Assist in implementing legislation in radiation protection across the Trust. The post holder is required to be up to date with current legal requirements. Act as an Operator and carry out practical tasks of medical exposures, under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 2.18 Undertake the dispensing and administration of radionuclide therapy treatment in the Department and on the wards. Dispensing and administering radionuclide therapy to patients in the Department and on wards. This process involves the transport and handling of radioactive substances contained within heavy lead shielding. It also involves emotional strain in dealing with cancer patients Managerial Prioritise and manage own work. Responds in a timely manner to requests for advice and assistance by customers, using own judgment to prioritise the request against existing workload. Delegate and manage tasks and responsibilities associated with any of the duties listed above to other Healthcare Scientists. Supervise staff as required, including trainees. Responsible for ensuring equipment used for test purposes is maintained; including statutory requirements for calibration [includes programme of testing & calibration of all instruments used for measurement and monitoring of radioactive substances] To minimise financial costs by safe and effective use of high capital value equipment (in excess of £30,000 Teaching, Training and Research Participate in the training of Clinical Scientists and Clinical Technologists, and other scientific staff including supervision of trainees. Responsible for trainee competency assignment and assessment. Initiate, supervise and carry out development and research, following a programme agreed with the Head of Clinical & Radiation Physics. Liaise with clinicians, and other clinical staff to provide expert scientific advice and support for clinical research programmes Assist in the local approval of trials requirement medical physics assessments Participate in professional matters, Participate and present work Nationally, and to others. Report on the results of such research at national and international scientific meeting and by published papers in refereed journals To maintain skills and afford development of practical and theoretical skills and knowledge Maintain registration and participate in professional CPD programmes Keep abreast of the latest scientific and technical developments and their applications in medical and associated fields and attend suitable seminars and courses as part of training and personal development and to further the work of the department Quality and Clinical Governance Ensure all activities are carried out and comply with the quality framework (BS EN ISO 9001-2015) and conform to Statutory Regulations, approved Codes of Practice and Local Safety Rules. Support the development and maintenance of the local quality framework by developing and maintaining supporting documentation, carrying out audits etc. Maintain appropriate and accurate records of the procedures performed. These may be required for inspection by the appropriate statutory authorities. Participate in Service Line and Trust-wide corporate and clinical governance initiatives as appropriate Communications and Working Relationships To communicate and liaise effectively with Service Line and other hospital staff at all levels Senior Trust Managers Consultant Medical Staff Clinical Staff Non-clinical Staff Scientific & Technical Staff To communicate and liaise effectively with patients and organisations external to the Trust To support pan-Service Line activities as required by the management team Other Work hours necessary for the proper and efficient performance of the work. The department currently provides routine services from 08.30 to 17.30 Monday to Friday, and occasional work at other hours and weekends. Duties may include provision of services outside of these hours (such as to support radiopharmacy. Duties include travel to other departments and work on premises of other NHS and non-NHS premises. Perform other appropriate duties which may be required from time to time by the Head of Clinical & Radiation Physics Take all precautions when dealing with ionising and non-ionising radiation hazards, and any biological hazards encountered (particularly with equipment used for interventional procedures). The post holder may be called upon at any time (during and outside normal working hours) for assistance (with others) in emergencies involving radiation and radioactive materials.
