An opportunity has arisen within Kent County Council’s Structures Inspections and Assessment Team for a motivated and experienced Highway Structures Inspector. You will need to have experience with Highway Structures such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls and reinforced earthworks. The role will offer the successful applicant an opportunity to develop their career with a client organisation in the Civil Engineering sector. This is a permanent position at grade KR8. You will be supported to work flexibly from home and your primary base at KCC’s offices in Ashford. In addition, you will be required to visit sites, carry out inspections, and check work on site.
About us
Kent County Council is responsible for a highway network of 8700km, with our highway network being the most valuable asset we own as an authority. The Highway Structures in our care represent a significant proportion of the value of the highway network and as a team we take great pride in managing those assets effectively for both current and future generations. We are responsible for approximately 1,100 bridges and viaducts, 570 large culverts, 450 other structures (such as retaining walls, underpasses and gantries) and 2 tunnels. We are also responsible for over 250km of safety barriers on the network.
The Structures Inspections and Assessment team is responsible for reliably and effectively inspecting Kent’s Structures to keep them safe for those who use them, importantly this is a duty required by law and for which Kent County Council is held accountable.
About You
The successful candidate will be required to carry out inspections of highway Structures, determine any defects in the structure stock, commission minor repair works, supervise these works, and ensure records of the inspections are kept up to date. An important part of the role is to build up excellent working relationships with all associated KCC Highway Teams as well as our main Contractor.
It is essential that you are able to prioritise your own workload, work to tight deadlines, be methodical in your approach, use initiative and operate with minimum supervision. Due to the variety of locations of our structures in Kent, you will require a valid UK driving licence and Kent County Council provides a vehicle to enable the undertaking of site visits.
