Our financial services are vital not only to the everyday running of HMRC but to building the Department’s future as a trusted, modern tax and customs department. To do this, we need great people like you to support and build a professional, empowered and inclusive Finance Function right across HMRC.
You will study towards a CIMA Finance Qualification via a Level 7 Apprenticeship.
The scheme duration is 4 years. After 2 years, and a successful assessment, you will be offered promotion to Senior Officer, and you will receive a salary uplift.
During your apprenticeship you will carry out work placements across a range of Finance teams, which will give you a unique experience of how finance works within HMRC, while also studying for your qualification.
There are 4 placements in total, 3 x 1-year placements in Finance roles and then you will spend your final year on a development programme.
Your work placements will ensure that you gain the variety and breadth of experience required to be recognised as a qualified accountant.
You will be supported to gain skills and experience needed to apply for G7 opportunities through fair and open competition.

Job description
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Management Reporting - perform important month end activities, ensure accuracy and provide insight, which supports the team to produce financial reports.
- Financial Accounting and Reporting - delivering core financial controls, providing technical accounting advice and producing the annual report and accounts.
- Financial Operations - ensuring that financial processes run efficiently such as purchasing, income, cash management, expense, payroll and master data setup.
- Finance Business Partnering - long term planning, budgeting, forecasting, analysis and communication of financial data and reports, supporting investment appraisals and commercial activities.
- Risk management - working closely with other corporate functions and stakeholders to monitor and mitigate risk.
- Strategic Finance - provide strategic advice and analysis on financial impact, performance and risk to senior stakeholders and through this contribute to the strategic direction of the Department.
- Systems and Data - manage the financial systems controls and user support processes.

About you:
- You have exceptional communication skills and can use clear and concise language to convey your opinions and ideas, including making best use of digital resources.
- Ability to build and maintain positive relationships through good interpersonal skills and communication skills.
- Enjoy finding creative solutions to problems and using these solutions to inform decisions.
- You have time management and prioritisation skills and can adapt to changing priorities whilst adhering to strict deadlines.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others to successfully achieve tasks and deliver results.
Essential Criteria
- A Degree minimum 2.1 in any subject.
- Existing Civil Servants will need a minimum of Level 4 Qualification or equivalent to apply.
- Not undertaking another apprenticeship or government funded qualification at the same time.
Plus:
- Applicants must complete and pass eligibility assessment from our Training Provider at enrolment stage. You will be assessed against Level 7 Apprenticeship Standard.

Team members that are moving offices as a result of the Locations Programme will be entitled to a Moves Adjustment Payment for three years where they incur additional costs. This is calculated based on the difference between the costs of travelling to and from the new and old office, over a weekly period. Selection process details
There are five stages:
Stage 1 : Application form - Applications for the programme close 23:55pm on 19th March 2024.
You will be asked to complete:
1. A basic application form, detailing your personal details.
2. CV - Details of your qualifications and job history, this is for information only and will not be scored.
3. Personal Statement of no more than 750 words to cover the following :
- Confirmation on how you meet the essential criteria.
- Examples of how you meet the person specification for this role.

How to write your PS , Civil Service Careers (civil-service-careers.gov.uk) This may assist you in providing the evidence required in your Personal statement.
Stage 2 : Online tests
You are required to complete 2 online tests, the Civil Service Numerical Test and Civil Service Verbal Test.
You will receive an invitation, after the advert closing date, to sit the online tests. The deadline for completing both tests is 12 noon on 02 April 2024.
After the test deadline, we will review scores from the verbal and numerical tests. If you meet the minimum standard for each test your application will be put on hold for further consideration. Meeting the minimum standard is no guarantee of an invitation to continue the selection process.
We reserve the right to increase the scores for all tests to manage the applications through to next stage. You will be informed if you have passed or failed the raised standard.
Successful candidates will be invited to the next stage of the selection process.
Stage 3 : Civil Service Judgement Test
If you are successful in Stage 2, you will be invited to complete the Civil Service Judgement Test online test.
This test must be completed by 12 noon on 09 April 2024.
Once you have completed the test, your application will be put on hold for further consideration. Meeting the minimum standard is no guarantee of an invitation to continue the selection process.
We reserve the right to increase the scores for all tests to manage the applications through to next stage. You will be informed if you have passed or failed the raised standard.
Successful candidates will be invited to the next stage of the selection process.
Stage 4: Personal Statement Sift
If you have passed the test stage your 750 word Personal Statement will then be sifted, following which, scores will be provided. We expect sifting to be held W/C 15 April 2024.
Stage 5: Virtual Assessment Centre
If you have been successful at the sift stage, you will be invited to attend a half day virtual online assessment centre. This will consist of a group exercise, written exercise and an interview.
The interview will assess both Behaviours and Strengths. Full details will be provided prior to interview.
We expect the virtual online assessment centre to be held between 3 June 2024 and 14 June 2024.
