Job Introduction

i is looking for a dynamic Politics Live News Editor, an exciting new leadership position in i’s politics team. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to help lead i’s political coverage, ensuring our award-winning team has maximum digital impact. The successful candidate must have an in-depth knowledge of UK politics, alongside an instinct for how policy decisions have real-world impact. They must have experience of managing a team of reporters and a thorough understanding of digital publishing best practice.
 

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Working core hours of 7am-4pm, to set up the politics team for the day, helping to create the early publication schedule
  • To conceive ideas for high impact digital projects with the lobby team for the day ahead, and present those ideas to senior editors in conference
  • To oversee digital publishing of stories throughout the day, ensuring deadlines are met and best practice is followed, especially razor-sharp headlines
  • To coordinate with the audience team to ensure all parts of the newsroom are ready to best promote the work of the politics team
  • To oversee a specialist Politics Live blog each day, making it the home of i’s political breaking news and live analysis
  • To ensure the fast-moving political agenda is covered either by the lobby team or the wider news team where appropriate
  • To work towards team benchmarks for success, ensuring the operation is meeting its digital subscription goals
     

Skills and Experience

  • Experience on the news desk of a national news publisher or political news reporting experience
  • A deep knowledge and understanding of major political  news, with excellent judgement
  • An ambition to take on more responsibility and progress your career towards senior leadership
  • Excellent people-management skills, and a proven ability to get the best out of experienced journalists
  • An ability to write and edit news and features quickly and to deadline
  • Incisive analytical skills and the ability to approach the news agenda in a creative and original manner
  • A commitment to i's editorial standards of impartial and incisive coverage
  • Good knowledge of media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice
