Job description

A vacancy exists for an Industrial Safety Engineer at Heysham 1 Power Station.


The Opportunity


The successful candidate will provide Industrial Safety expertise and leadership support to the site to ensure that appropriate Industrial Safety arrangements are in place and the station is meeting company and regulatory expectations whilst also delivering continuously improving performance. As an Industrial Safety subject matter expert, the candidate will be required to provide health and safety advice and information to line management and departments across station as well as driving improvements in safety culture.


Pay, benefits and culture


The salary range associated with this role is between £40,069 - £71,779 and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. We also offer an attractive pension scheme along with some great company benefits. This is a full-time, permanent position based on-site at Heysham 1 Power Station.

What you’ll be doing


Nature and Scope

  • Support effective risk identification and management processes.
  • Support the development of a positive safety culture and promote greater safety awareness.
  • Monitor and report Industrial Safety performance on behalf of the site, identifying and recommending appropriate countermeasures to address emerging adverse trends.
  • Monitor and report on compliance with, and effectiveness of, site safety management arrangements, making recommendations for improvement where necessary.
  • Develop and maintain a compliance evaluation programme for industrial health and safety against company and legal requirements. Identifies and reports results and progresses the resolution of areas for improvement.
  • Maintain register of legislative compliance arrangements for the site.
  • Support the investigation of events ensuring that root causes are effectively identified and addressed within the CAP process.
  • Advise on Industrial Safety training needs and support effective delivery of training inputs where appropriate.
  • Promote and maintain a positive Industrial Safety profile by spending time in the field.


Principal Accountabilities

  • Accountable for providing specialist Industrial Safety advice to line management and departments across site whilst delivering agreed targets.
  • Liaise with the internal / external Regulator and other applicable external bodies on Industrial Safety matters.
  • Evaluate and report on compliance with legal and company / site Industrial Safety requirements.
  • Engage with fleet experts as a key stakeholder in the revision or production of Industrial Safety standards or guidelines for company wide application.
  • Participate within the Industrial Safety Peer Group network in the development and implementation of fleet-wide continuous improvement initiatives and sharing of good practice.
  • Devise and run safety improvement campaigns.


Who you are


  • Detailed Knowledge of driving and improving safety culture within a high-risk organisation.
  • Knowledge of HSE regulatory framework, and UK safety legislation relevant to Nuclear Power Station Operations and site licence requirements.
  • Knowledge of key Industrial Safety risks present within nuclear power stations and of applicable control measures to mitigate risks.
  • Knowledge of company safety management system and associated Industrial Safety standards, specifications and guidelines in place to provide safe systems of working within the power station environment.
  • Knowledge of safety auditing & monitoring processes.
  • Ability to positively challenge and coach.
  • The ability to communicate effectively at all levels.


Any Applicant with a NEBOSH Certificate and/or a Demonstrable proven track record of influencing Safety Culture within a High-Risk organisation will have a distinct advantage.

Applicants will be required to obtain CTC level vetting prior to taking up their duties.


To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
