About the Role
Please note this is a fixed term opportunity initially for 12 months
Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in ensuring safety in healthcare? We're seeking a passionate and experienced individual to lead our Strategy and Insight directorate, providing strategic leadership of high-quality insight, policy and analysis to ensure the NMC regulates well, and influences the present and future context. You'll orchestrate the development and implementation of our corporate strategy and policy, and the implementation and prioritisation of deliverables to meet the NMC strategic aims, ensuring that inclusion and equality is at the heart of everything we do.
You will be a member of the Executive Board and will be collectively responsible for leading the organisation to deliver on its vision of safe, effective and kind nursing and midwifery practice that improves everyone’s health and wellbeing. As Interim Executive Director you will provide broader leadership and direction to the whole of the NMC as part of an effective and collaborative executive team. 
 
About You
The successful candidate will have the following skills and experience

  • Senior level regulatory experience with a deep understanding of the regulatory sector and ideally, the context in which the nursing and midwifery professions operate. 
  • Substantial experience of working at a senior leadership level in a high profile, complex organisation.  
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining strategic relationships and partnership working both internally and externally. 
  • Strong leadership skills, and proven ability to build, lead, motivate and empower diverse teams delivering multidisciplinary and complex services. 
  • Proven track record in developing strategic and operational plans, managing budgets, and delivering against people, operational and financial resource plans. 
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills including the ability to communicate with confidence and clarity on complex issues to the media and other external stakeholders. 
  • Experience of leading large teams and organisations through significant cultural change by developing clear plans and approaches. 
  • Ability to think critically and analytically to draw sound conclusions based on complex information. 

About the Selection Process

If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to undertake a series of assessments prior to a final panel interview. The assessments will include: psychometric leadership assessments and a staff engagement exercises which involves shortlisted candidates facilitating a discussion with a selection of colleagues from the NMC on a given topic.  
Please note, these assessments will not result in a pass or fail decision. Rather, they are designed to support the panel’s decision making and highlight areas for the panel to explore further at interview. 
Shortlisted candidates will be offered an informal conversation with Matthew McClelland, the current Executive Director for Strategy and Insight, ahead of the final panel interview. This does not form part of the assessment process and is an opportunity for you to find out more about the role.

About Us

Our core role is to regulate. First, we promote high education and professional standards for nurses and midwives across the UK, and nursing associates in England. Second, we maintain the register of professionals eligible to practise. Third, we investigate concerns about nurses, midwives and nursing associates - something that affects a tiny minority of professionals each year. We believe in giving professionals the chance to address concerns, but we’ll always take action when needed. 

To regulate well, we support our professions and the public. We create resources and guidance that are useful throughout people’s careers, helping them to deliver our standards in practice and address new challenges. We also support people involved in our investigations, and we’re increasing our visibility so people feel engaged and empowered to shape our work.

Our Pay Policy
It is expected that staff new to the NMC will ordinarily be appointed to the bottom of the relevant pay band. However in exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to offer a salary above the bottom of the relevant pay band but we may request proof of current earnings. Please note that we offer an annual review of salaries and adopt a generous progressive pay approach. Further details of which are available on request.
