Job description

The Department for Business and Trade champions open and fair global trading that supports UK economic growth. Our programme is continuing to expand in 2024, including negotiating and implementing trade agreements, the UK’s representation at the World Trade Organisation and tackling overseas market access barriers for UK businesses.

You will join the team responsible for our trade policy on government procurement. Our team’s objective is to create a trading system that supports UK businesses fairly competing for public contract opportunities in overseas markets.

The advertised position will lead on making and delivering our trade policy governing the UK’s international treaty commitments on government procurement. Our team works in close collaboration with Cabinet Office commercial procurement policy, alongside other government departments and the devolved administrations. You will have responsibility for working with a wide range of stakeholders to deliver our team’s goals, and to factor in the UK’s international and domestic priorities.

The post-holder will be working in a fast-paced environment, with regular exposure to international meetings. You will also develop your skills in horizon-scanning, analysis and understanding of negotiation dynamics.

Diverse perspectives and experiences are critical to our success and we welcome applications from all people from all backgrounds with the experience and skills needed to perform this role.

  • Develop and provide expert policy advice (no prior knowledge of the subject field is required, but successful candidates will need to demonstrate a willingness and aptitude to rapidly acquire deep subject-specialism).
  • Support the delivery of trade dialogues and negotiations, including preparation of the UK’s positions and tactics, delivery in the room, and follow-up actions.
  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively across the department, Whitehall, the devolved administrations, embassies and external stakeholders from industry and civil society.
  • Contribute to making the team and wider directorate function effectively and efficiently and be an excellent place to work.
  • You will work closely with legal, Cabinet Office and a range of stakeholders.
