Job description

The role of an IMU Investigator is primarily an agile worker role where you can choose to work from home or from one of our offices. However, you will be required to attend Sittingbourne Police Station for training and team meetings as and when required.

Join our Investigation Management Unit (IMU) and you’ll perform an interesting, challenging, and important role supporting crime investigation and recording.

  • you will be creating and quality assuring crime reports by reviewing incidents provided to us by 101/999 contact handlers, online crime reports, email or from police officers
  • based on the information given you will need to carry out reviews as to whether there are lines of enquiries which need to be explored, establishing investigative opportunities and make an initial outcome decision
  • you'll help to provide first class service to the people of Kent communicating with members of the public and police officers to establish further details, recording crime accurately and efficiently in line with national crime recording standards and the Home Office counting rules
  • being an IMU investigator can be challenging and unpredictable, and no two days are the same. You will be involved in creating and reviewing reports for a range of different crimes, from criminal damage and shoplifting through to sexual assaults and domestic incidents. You will receive full support, training and the skills to ensure that you can be the best you can be. The role can be challenging, but it also creates a sense of achievement and satisfaction to know that you will be helping victims and witnesses, keeping our communities safe

Our IMU investigators need to

  • work as an individual or part of a team
  • cope with fluctuating demand and be able to remain effective whilst working under varying deadlines
  • possess the ability to analyse information gained and use own initiative to make decisions
  • accurately record information to a high standard with the ability to identify and correct errors

Training

We will provide training to equip you with all the tools needed to undertake this role. Training will be delivered over eight-to-ten weeks. Most of the training will be delivered virtually whilst you are at home. We will supply relevant IT equipment for this and you will need to have a suitable environment and a stable broadband connection. The training is usually delivered Monday to Friday, the times of the training can vary and some of it will be shifts. Times will be confirmed when you start your employment. You will be fully supported and encouraged by our experienced trainers and team leaders throughout your training.

Eligibility, skills and experience

Eligibility

We are looking for the following skills to meet the role requirements:

  • be 18 years or older
  • have permanent right to live in the UK
  • have lived in the UK continuously for the last three years (this does not apply if you've been abroad with the British Armed Forces)
  • not be registered bankrupt or subject to a County Court Judgement or an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA)
  • not be a member of the British National Party or similar organisation
  • any previous criminal convictions or cautions (including those spent), fixed penalty notices, traffic offences or any involvement with the police must be declared and they may affect your application

Personal characteristics

Our IMU Investigators will need to:

  • work well under pressure managing fluctuating demand and deadlines
  • have a reassuring manner and be able to respond to people in a calm manner
  • use own initiative while following procedures
  • work as an individual and as part of a team
  • be able to analyse information and use own initiative to make decisions
  • accurately record information to a high standard with the ability to identify and correct errors
  • demonstrate an appropriate degree of decision making and empathy when dealing with officers, staff and the people of Kent

Essential skills required

  • GCSE or equivalent pass in English
  • computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • excellent keyboard skills with speed of 30 words per minute and high degrees of accuracy
  • ability to effectively communicate with members of the public over the telephone

Vetting

To help us do this we ask you to complete a detailed vetting form which asks for details of your family members (parents, partner, children and siblings) and any criminal associates. You must let anyone whose details you have provided know that they will be looked into as part of your pre-employment checks. Legislative constraints mean that we’re unable to disclose the results of enquiries on third parties.

Other information that we will ask you to disclose includes financial information such as outstanding debts, CCJs etc. We run a credit reference check on all applicants. Police staff have access to privileged and highly sensitive information, which may make them vulnerable to corruption, so it’s important for us to understand applicants’ financial situation.
