Contract: Ongoing, permanent contract

Hours: Full-time, 36 hours and 45 minutes per week

Additional Benefits: Up to 11% employer pension contribution, flex time provisions, 20 days recreational leave and up to 14 public holiday days

About the Australian Federal Police (AFP)

The AFP’s role is to provide dynamic and effective law enforcement to the people of Australia. It provides policing throughout Australia in relation to the prevention and detection of crimes against the Commonwealth, protection to critical infrastructure, and delivers community police services to the community of the ACT. The AFP is also Australia's international law enforcement and policing representative, and the Australian Government's chief source of advice on policing issues.

The AFP works closely with a range of other law enforcement bodies at state, territory, Commonwealth and international levels, enhancing safety and providing a secure regional and global environment.

About the position

The Investigative Assistant position is a support role within the Australian Federal Police office in London. The primary function of the Investigative Assistant is to perform operational support duties for the police Liaison Officers, including one Counsellor (an AFP Superintendent) and four First Secretaries (AFP Sergeants).

In addition, the Investigative Assistant also assists the Executive Support Officer in providing administrative support for office personnel, including occasional travel, assisting with meeting and function organising, and financial processing duties.

Under the direction of the AFP Senior Officer the key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide investigative assistance to enable the timely response to operational and intelligence enquiries between Australian law enforcement and the AFP London office area of responsibility, including with both UK and other foreign law enforcement agencies.
  • Monitor, disseminate and report on criminal information and intelligence by processing routine requests and drafting correspondence to local and foreign law enforcement agencies when required. This may also incorporate the assessment, creation and dissemination of information reports.
  • Maintain an awareness of key investigations, and strategic and operational activities, and keep all information holdings up to date. The ability to identify issues regarding legislation, regulations, protocol or custom that may impact on the achievement of strategic and operational objectives is essential.
  • Liaise, collaborate and build partnerships with key AFP, Australian government and external agencies to ensure appropriate support.
  • Provide intelligence support by researching and analysing issues and intelligence products from a range of sources and report findings.
  • Undertake research on law enforcement issues, prepare and manage both internal and external correspondence, and drafting of AFP executive briefing papers.
  • Coordinate routine reporting requirements, including reporting against action plans and the preparation of weekly reports.
  • Assist the Executive Support Officer to undertake ad-hoc administrative duties, including the management of property, calendar and diary appointments, filing systems, processing of budgetary, financial, invoice and reimbursement documentation.
  • Coordinate and facilitate training sessions related to AFP programs.
  • Provide assistance in facilitating liaison functions/events at the Australian High Commission/AFP residences for visits of government and police officials.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Working knowledge of UK and Australian law enforcement environment is desirable.
  • An understanding of the legal systems and practices in the UK is desirable.
  • Experience working in a fast paced, busy work environment.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and act with diplomacy and discretion when dealing with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively conduct vital research and deliver high quality reports.
  • Proficiency in the use of IT office systems, such as word processing, spreadsheet programs, and Microsoft Teams, and proficient project management skills.

Security Requirements

  • Australian baseline security clearance or ability to gain same. Applicants must therefore hold citizenship of at least one of the Five Eyes Countries: Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA or Canada.
