At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer.

We are professionals with purpose, beating cancer every day. But we need to go much further and much faster. That's why we we're looking for someone talented, someone innovative and ambitious, someone like you.

About the team

Cancer Research Horizons, Cancer Research UK's commercialisation arm, has access to over £400m of cutting-edge cancer research every year which it helps reach cancer patients by translating breakthroughs into new treatments, diagnostics, and technologies.

But not enough of the promising new ideas and innovations cancer researchers make reach patients because there is a funding gap between academic research and taking drugs and treatments to the market. Cancer Research Horizons' specialist Ventures team helps bridge that gap by investing its Seed Fund in identifying and validating breakthrough opportunities and supporting new oncology companies to form and progress to being ready for further investment. This year alone the team has agreed to provide early-stage funding to eight new ventures.

We have great ambitions for the future of our Ventures team, including a fresh focus on building out critical business and philanthropic networks, and elevating our profile with external stakeholders.

About the role

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join the Ventures team as our Investor and External Relations Associate. In this new position, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the Ventures team can grow the number and quality of the start-ups it supports by building and curating our philanthropic, Investor and business networks and raising the profile of the Ventures team and its portfolio company successes.

What will you be doing?

  • Working with the CRUK philanthropy team to help increase donations to the Seed Fund through facilitating relationship management and producing an exclusive suite of benefits for donors, including events.

  • Facilitate building and managing new and existing relationships with co-investors and follow-on investors, including producing investor showcase events.

  • Facilitate building and managing networks of specialists who can help advise start-up founders and help fill gaps in early-stage management teams (including mentors, subject-specific experts, interim managers, board members, etc.) and a network of support service providers (accounting, legal, banking, marketing, etc.). Includes identifying networking opportunities, content creation and event organisation.

  • Raising the profile of the Ventures team's offer and its portfolio companies' successes through proactive PR and marketing (working with the Horizons communications and marketing team).

  • Provide support across all areas of the Ventures team's External Relations, PR and marketing to ensure the team can grow the number and quality of the start-ups it supports.

  • Curate and manage external networks of donors (working with the CRUK philanthropy team), investors/co-investors and business specialists. Includes using CRUK's CRM systems, and creating engaging content and high-quality, audience specific events.

  • Help raise the profile of the Ventures team and its portfolio companies through shaping and implementing a proactive PR and marketing campaign. Includes creating a calendar of news stories, thought pieces, multimedia content (films, podcasts, etc.) and events, in collaboration with the Horizons communications and marketing team.

  • Maximise return on key conference attendance for the Ventures team by scoping new opportunities for engagement (events, content, etc.). Includes evaluating existing and potential conference programme for key audiences.

  • Produce briefing materials for key audiences to promote better understanding of the Ventures team's credentials and offer, including PPT presentations and brochures.

What skills are we looking for?

  • Significant experience of building networks and developing effective collaborative links between different groups, ideally in technical or scientific environments.

  • Exceptional communications skills (written and oral) including relevant experience in PR and marketing.

  • Relevant experience in database management (CRM systems).
