About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Junior Geospatial Analyst within the BGS Informatics team to support the work of our National geological mapping and Informatics data teams, based at the BGS offices in Edinburgh.
In this role, the successful candidate will contribute to a range of interdisciplinary projects across the BGS Informatics and Science areas, supporting a wider geospatial team, primarily through the manipulation and management of the various geospatial data types we work with daily, from geological map components through to environmental data products.
You will also implement and manage geospatial technical tasks as required by projects including data editing, quality assurance and metadata, whilst also supporting in the translation and access of data through corporate systems. Tasks will include digitisation, geological map compilation and involvement with data processing for environmental dataset creation.
Another part of the role will involve you working together with other data engineers, Geospatial Analysts, geological and other research-focused staff, to provide general geospatial technical expertise and support where required.
About you
You will have experience of using GIS software for map-based data management and visualisation activities, plus be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the techniques, processes and tools related to the geospatial data subject area.
In addition, you will also be able to demonstrate experience of attention to detail, as well as knowledge of spatial data presentation and visualisation. Strong communication, time-management and task prioritisation skills are required for this role, alongside an ability to work effectively within a hybrid (remote/office based) team environment.
Candidates must have a degree relevant to spatial data science (e.g. geography, geology). Post-graduate or equivalent work experience, in a field using GIS software as well as scripting for data management, manipulation, analysis and visualisation is also required. Candidates should be able to provide evidence of past projects and an on-going interest in geospatial data and its visualisation.
