Job description

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Station Leader to join our hard-working team based at King Edward Point, South Georgia. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams and keep everyone safe!

Our skilled science, operational and support staff based in Cambridge, Antarctica and the Arctic, work together to deliver research that uses the Polar Regions to advance our understanding of Earth as a sustainable planet. Through our extensive logistic capability and know how BAS facilitates access for the British and international science community to the UK polar research operation. Numerous national and international collaborations, combined with an excellent infrastructure help sustain a world leading position for the UK in Antarctic affairs. You’ll be joining our team at King Edward Point Research Station to lead a highly motivated group of operational and scientific staff. A year-long tour as Station Leader will be a rewarding opportunity to support the Government of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) in their work and scientists in their research.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop - on starting with BAS, there will be a month-long period aimed at specific Station Leader training, followed by another month of general pre-deployment training.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and managing daily and upcoming station activities
  • Maintaining effective communication between all stakeholders on and off station
  • Supporting and delivering BAS strategies

Located in the Southern Ocean, the King Edward Point facility provides critical research to support the management of the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) Marine Protected Area and the sustainable fisheries that are licensed by the Government of SGSSI.

For the role of Station Leader we are looking for somebody who:

  • Has proven leadership and management experience
  • Has boating experience in a polar environment
  • Can demonstrate a competent level of field skills, knowledge and experience in a mountain setting or similar
