At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Grand Prix winner George Russell.

The Role:

A fantastic opportunity has become available in our Mechanical Design Group for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer managing the Front Suspension group.

Reporting to the Head of Mechanical Design, the successful candidate will be managing a team of designers in taking full ownership and responsibility for a variety of complex design projects, both on our F1 car and for our Applied Science customers.

Key Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Oversee all design projects allocated to the Front Suspension Group ensuring that consistent, reliable and innovative design solutions are delivered.

  • Manage workload and priorities for all tasks the Front Suspension Group is responsible for outputting.

  • Undertake design projects themselves, delivering to release targets whilst managing the group.

  • Initiating and implementing the design and development of mechanical assemblies of the highest complexity and to the highest standards.

  • Drawing and CAD checking of group’s designs as well as production releasing of all non safety critical components.

  • Specifying and managing the R&D testing programmes for safety and performance critical systems.

  • Reliability management of assigned systems throughout component life cycle and in support of the team’s reliability function.

  • Line management of a group of talented designers ranging from Graduate to Senior levels, responsible for their personal and technical growth.

  • Close collaboration with other engineering departments and external suppliers to ensure fully integrated system designs, achieving optimal car performance.

  • Use of Catia FEA to support their own designs.

Essential Requirements:

  • Mechanical, automotive or aeronautical engineering degree (2:1 minimum grade) or similar qualification with a high level of experience in F1, another top level motorsport category or an equivalent high level engineering industry.

  • Experience of working at a senior level within a high level engineering environment taking sole responsibility/ownership for large design projects.

  • Strong knowledge of current F1/high level motorsport design systems, constructions and standards.

  • Structural composite design knowledge (including tooling techniques and materials).

  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills to ensure cross departmental integration.

  • High attention to detail and the ability to work under limited supervision to tight deadlines.

  • Extremely high behavioural standards of both themselves and their colleagues.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience of suspension systems and kinematic design.

  • Basic data analysis and system simulation knowledge.

  • Experience of Catia V5/3DX Mechanical Design package, knowledge of Catia Kinematics and surfacing experience.

  • Knowledge and experience in effectively managing sensitive Equality and Diversity topics

  • Knowledge and experience in effectively managing a diverse group of people
