Leading Hand Mechanical Engineer (Temporary 6 months +)

We have an excellent opportunity to join the team at The University of Cambridge.

We are recruiting a Leading Hand Mechanical Engineerto join on a temporary basis working full time 8:00 - 5pm Monday - Friday.

This role is initially for around 6 months however this could increase.

The salary is a day rate which is negotiable depending on your experience and a car is provided.

What you will be doing -

Within this role you will be required to lead, coordinate and complete maintenance work, breakdowns, inspections, modifications, and project work. You will be responsible for a small team of multi-discipline engineers, assistants and contractors on installation projects or service modifications, ensuring everyone on site is safe and that any emergencies are dealt with promptly.

- Maintenance and repairs - Your duties will involve responding to planned and emergency tasks associated with building services across the University estate. Have the ability and experience to understand a broad range of increasingly complex and interactive services covering, heating, cooling, building management systems, ventilation, filtration, energy conservation, gas services, cold/hot water services, sanitary and waste plumbing, compressed air, humidifiers, chemical treatment, fans, pumps, boilers, calorifiers and chillers, and steam. You will carry out repairs to a vast range of piped materials, to resolve leaks and upgrade particular systems and complete point of work risk assessments for every task, and job specific risk assessments if required.

- Supervision - Supervise and leads site teams comprising Maintenance Unit fitters and contractors, for the completion of emergency repair, modification and service requiring liaison with departmental staff. Deputise for the Mechanical Supervisor, during periods of absence. Diagnose engineering faults and directing others to effectively repair. Work or support members of the emergency call out team which requires positive commitment to be available out of hours. Lead the team carrying out remedial works to completion. Recognise engineering problems beyond the ability of the maintenance team; obtain advice and appropriate assistance to successful completion of the work. Advise the buyer on the most appropriate materials and components to be held in stock and required quantities. Maintain and demonstrate a high standard of workshop and plant room housekeeping and safe working practices. Complete specific and/or generic risk assessments and procedures in respect to maintenance duties within buildings.

- Administration & Management - Liaise with the Maintenance Unit Helpdesk on a daily basis receiving new and returning completed work orders. Coordinate the supply of materials and parts through the stores and books materials to specific work orders.Ensure returned work order reports are adequately detailed to allow good historical records to be maintained. Communicate with the Supervisor at least daily to report on maintenance progress or problems which may affect service level performance, personnel health, safety or moral.Maintain a good discipline amongst staff for whom you are directly responsible.Communicate regularly with maintenance staff to establish progress and discuss problems which may affect or delay service level performance.

- Out of hours response (Duty Technician) - You may be required to be a working member of the emergency call out team. This requires a positive commitment to be available on a rota basis for out of hours standby duties, to deal with system failures and other emergency situations requiring an immediate response.

- Projects - Liaise with project groups, departments, regulatory organisations, and staff concerning proposed modifications. Arrange contingencies to ensure services are maintained when requested by departments. Instruct, direct and complete mechanical refurbishments using available staff and contractors to agree designs, quality, within budget and on time.

Who are we looking for?

  1. You will need to demonstrate experience of managing and motivating people.
  2. Knowledge of Health and Safety.
  3. Recognised Trade Apprenticeship.
  4. City and Guilds Qualification or equivalent.
  5. NVQ Level 3 Mechanical Qualification or equivalent.
