About The Role

We seek to appoint a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering on an Enhanced Research Career Pathway. Within the Mechanical Engineering department, there is a diverse and dynamic range of research activities ranging from sustainable energy sources, additive manufacturing, bio-medical devices to cyber physical manufacturing. These reflect the close working relationship with industry, public stakeholders as well research funding bodies.

The department enjoys a healthy number (around 550) of undergraduate and post graduate students with year in industry variations in all programmes. Applicants must have the capacity to contribute flexibly to our accredited mechanical design led programmes within the broad range of Mechanical Engineering topics including manufacturing, design theory, engineering science (fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, dynamics, stress analysis) to engineering management. As all our courses are research-led and practice-driven, the successful applicant should be able to bring their research background into their teaching to enhance our students’ experience. Active participation in the Mechanical Engineering community is a key requirement of the post.

Key to achieving the UK’s commitment to a zero-carbon society by 2050 is the delivery of sustainable energy. We are looking to enhance our research across the spectrum of sustainable energy harvesting technologies with an emphasis on real world deployment, manufacturing or simulation challenges. The exact field of research should be synergistic with research in the department, school or Faculty and may be at device or system scale. The successful applicant will deliver departmentally relevant research but also interact strongly across the faculty through the Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (IRIs) in computational modelling, climate action, and materials and manufacturing.

The appointed postholder’s primary research focus will be on research excellence and is expected to result in world-leading publications, attraction of competitive funding and generation impact in the real world.

Academic Career Pathway

The pathway for this post is Enhanced Research. The Academic Career Pathways (ACP) scheme is designed to ensure that academic strengths whether in research, teaching, the wider student experience, leadership or innovation and engagement, are all appropriately recognised, developed, valued, and rewarded. For further information, please see our ACP webpage.
