Salary:

Lecturer Grade F: £39,347 to 44,263 per annum

Lecturer Grade G: £45,585 to £54,395 per annum

Senior Lecturer: £56,021 to £64,914 per annum

The Role

 

We seek to appoint an enthusiastic and outstanding Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Accounting (Teaching and Research:T&R) who can contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate accounting and finance programmes, with specific expertise in one or more of the following areas: financial accounting, audit and assurance, management accounting, corporate governance or non-financial reporting (ESG/sustainability reporting).  We encourage applications from those with experience of working in, or with, business, the third sector and/or policy.

 

You must be able to demonstrate research excellence – as evidenced by high quality publications – and deliver excellent teaching. You will have a strong research and scholarly trajectory in the discipline of Accounting with significant potential to generate research income and to pursue impact activities. In the case of lecturers, we would expect you to have the potential to develop an international reputation, whereas in the case of senior lecturers, we would expect this to have already been established. You will be committed to the success and development of Newcastle University Business School. If successful, you will join the dynamic and vibrant Accounting and Finance subject group within a business school that is committed to collegiality and academic citizenship.

 

For the Senior Lecturer position, you must have a PhD in a relevant subject and you will be expected to provide academic leadership commensurate with a senior lectureship position in our School. For the Lecturer position, you must have a PhD or be nearing completion (i.e. strictly within three months of submission at the time of application for the role).

Accounting and Finance is one of six subject groups within Newcastle University Business School. Our accounting academics are world-leading researchers in several areas of accounting including green finance and carbon accounting, big data and data analytics,, corporate governance, accountability, valuation and investor benchmarks, tax transparency disclosures and the history of accounting.  The group offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, together post-experience teaching and PhD supervision.

Lecturer in Accounting (T&R)

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the research profile of the Business School by publishing in high quality outlets in the discipline of accounting, demonstrating impact
  • Conduct research that demonstrates international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour and ensure all our students benefit from studying in a research intensive, research excellent academic environment
  • Pursue external funding
  • Demonstrate the potential for impact through the development of research-based solutions to real-world problems, engaging with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work
  • Supervise PGR students in a research-led university
  • Contribute to the Business School’s Triple Accreditation and Professional Body Accreditations
  • Have a commitment to high quality teaching and learning and student support
  • Support students throughout their studies in the role of personal tutor
  • Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with University standards and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks
  • Contribute to curriculum development
  • Operate as an active academic citizen and colleague in the Business School community

 

The Person 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Evidence of research/potential for publications in international and world-leading outlets in relevant areas of accounting
  • Evidence of/potential to develop and secure grant capture and/or impact
  • Evidence of or willingness to develop engagement with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research
  • Evidence of the ability to provide an outstanding educational experience, rooted in strong disciplinary accounting knowledge that engages, challenges, and inspires our students
  • Evidence of ability/potential to deliver research-led teaching, making effective use of technology to enhance learning. The ability to teach one or more of the following areas: financial accounting, audit and assurance, management accounting, corporate governance or non-financial reporting (ESG/sustainability reporting)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills
  • Demonstration of successful team working and operating as an effective colleague
  • Experience or potential for undertaking a management and leadership role
  • Evidence of/potential for academic citizenship

  • Working knowledge of accounting and finance databases (e.g. Bloomberg) would be desirable
  • Experience of working in, or with, business, the third sector and/or policy is desirable

 

Qualifications

  • A good Honours degree
  • PhD/DBA in Accounting at or near completion – i.e. strictly within three months of submission

Desirable

  • Qualified membership of Professional Body (for example ICAEW/ACA, ACCA, CIPFA, CIMA) as appropriate to the Subject area 

 

Senior Lecturer in Accounting (T&R)
