About the vacancy: UWE Bristol Centre for Music is recruiting a permanent 0.8 Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Classicaland Jazz Music Enrichment. In charge of organising and leading all Classical and Jazz activities at UWE Bristol Centre for Music, this role is responsible for a key part of the university-wide Music Enrichment offer including leading UWE Orchestra, Big Band and choirs.

About Centre for Music: Centre for Music is run by a small, dynamic team dedicated to providing extra and co-curricular music opportunities to all students and staff at UWE Bristol, supported by an extended team of freelance specialists. We do not provide music degrees so we can focus on our goal of supporting student and staff wellbeing and community cohesion through music. We run a well-equipped music facility open to all students and staff, plus groups and ensembles with corresponding live events, alongside teaching and learning from DJing to piano.

About the opportunity: We are looking for a versatile and experienced music leader and educator who can design, organise and deliver an innovative, engaging and inclusive Classical and Jazz programme at Centre for Music. This includes overseeing the leadership of our Classical and Jazz ensembles including UWE Orchestra, UWE Singers, UWE Big Band and more.

Working in a core team of four, this role reports directly to the Head of Centre for Music to ensure the Classical and Jazz programme is vibrant, engaging and strategically aligned to the goals of Centre for Music and UWE Strategy 2030. With plenty of scope to lead and develop your creative vision plus opportunities to teach in a variety of contexts and topics according to your specialisms, this is a unique academic role where music expertise is utilised to maximise the personal and social benefits of music activity for participants.

About you: You will be an experienced, flexible educator able to teach across a range of topics and instruments in different formats from small group to lecture hall, from beginner to advanced, with engagement and inclusion as central values.

You will be an excellent, innovative and highly organised music leader and event planner who is able to engage and develop students and staff with a wide range of experience and confidence in music through the conducting and supervision of ensembles, whilst organising safe, well-run performances and events. You will be a specialist in Classical and Jazz and have experience leading either professional or community groups within these genres.

You will be able to offer a vision of how to integrate your portfolio with the wider offer of Centre for Music that currently supports around 2000 students per year across many genres of music.

You will be a skilled communicator able to develop rapport with students, community members and senior stakeholders with skill and persuasion.

Where is this role based?
This post is based at our lively Frenchay campus where we have invested in the latest facilities and resources to give both our staff and students access to everything they need to succeed.

However, you will on occasion need to travel to both our Glenside and City campuses and central Bristol venues.
