Job description

£33,024 - £36,648 per annum
We are looking for an experienced Legal Officer to join our Property and Housing team at Durham County Council.

Our highly skilled and professional Property and Housing team deal with all aspects of legal property and housing work, including commercial, agricultural, residential, landlord and tenant and housing matters. The post holder will be responsible for drafting and negotiating legal documentation and will provide advice to officers, members and outside bodies.

We actively promote a positive work / life balance and support wellbeing.  We offer flexible home and office working, a friendly and supportive working environment and a wealth of interesting work.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?
You will work with our Senior Lawyer, Lawyers and other members of the Property and Housing team, and with colleagues in the Council’s wider legal team, across all areas of work covered by the team.

You will be responsible for your own caseload, providing a professional legal service with support from our dedicated team of Legal Assistants, and assist the Senior Lawyer and Lawyers when the need arises. You will also provide front-line supervision of, and advice and guidance to, junior staff within the team, so there is an excellent opportunity for the post holder to develop their supervisory skills.

Now is an exciting time to join us as we develop our services and look for new and innovative ways of working.

We encourage you to contact Mark Clayton (Senior Lawyer Property and Housing) via email mark.clayton@durham.gov.uk to arrange an informal discussion about the role.

WHAT WILL I NEED?
We are looking for a highly skilled legal practitioner with experience in housing and property matters, including handling commercial property transactions.  You will be a Graduate or Associate Member of CILEx or have substantial experience relevant to the work associated with the post.

You will also need:
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, case law, procedures and good practice.
  • Good organisation and communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm, determination, and the drive to achieve results.
Please use the ‘Person Specification’ section of your application form to demonstrate that you have the essential and where possible, desirable experience, skills, and knowledge.
