Job description

Driving Class 2 vehicle (Salford)

*Temporary assignment*

You will need:

  • UK Class 2 driving license + CPC card

About the role

· You will be responsible for any allocated vehicle, including cleanliness, safe operation and routine maintenance. This involves checking the allocated vehicle on a daily basis to ensure safe operation of the vehicle including the lifting mechanism where appropriate.

· You will assist the cabin crew in the removal of refuse, green waste, recyclables and waste from highways, households, industrial and commercial premises, open land, rear passage-ways and empty properties.

· You will ensure your duties and the ones of your colleagues are carried out in accordance with Health & Safety Regulations, wearing all necessary safety equipment and uniform provided, and taking all precautions needed to avoid accidents.

· You will complete all paperwork and digital reports associated with the rounds, including mapping of routes, reporting pest control issues, and reporting damaged or contaminated bins.

· Ensure that the Driver's logbook or tachograph is completed and up to date at all times ensuring compliance with driver regulations.

· Identify and report any problem areas on the rounds and offer suggestions for improvements.

· You will carry out vehicle checks as required and report any defects on the vehicle or parts of the vehicle that may impact its performance or pose a safety risk to your line manager and Vehicle Services Management department.

· You will report any accident or near miss immediately to the appropriate manager.

· You will assist in the purchase of new vehicles by utilising demonstration vehicles where necessary and completing the relevant reports.

· Drive in a safe and courteous manner with due regards for other road users and any site rules relevant to the location visited.

· You will be a key-holder: responsible for unlocking and locking gates, bin rooms, and buildings.

· On occasion, you will assist the cabin crew with loader responsibilities to meet the needs of the service. This will include emptying containers and kitchen caddies and returning them to designated locations, distribute contamination stickers, distribute compostable bags, post collection cards.

· You will report any trade waste being deposited next to containers for collection, or any member of the public trying to dispose of additional waste into your vehicle without authority.

· You will occasionally receive and respond to customer queries and will need to provide advice on services.

· To undertake any other such duties that are reasonably commensurate with the level of this post.

· The Council will deliver its waste collection service successfully.

· You will maintain the Council's fleet in good condition.

· You will work with other crew members to ensure work schedules are completed on time.

· You will assist the Council with achieving recycling targets, working towards our climate change priorities.

· You will contribute to maintaining health and safety and achieving no accidents.

· You will maintain the cleanliness of our city.

What we need from you

· To model and demonstrate our values and behaviours.

· Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, receiving and passing on instructions and requests.

· Ability to work as part of a team.

· Ability to read route maps and plan vehicle routes to complete work schedules efficiently.

· Demonstrate a good understanding of drivers' hours' legislation, tacho graph procedures and other legal obligations.

· Demonstrate a commitment to customer care and an understanding of good customer service.

· Ability to work flexibly in order to respond to the needs of the service e.g. bank holidays, emergencies, across different work areas and locations.

· Demonstrate the ability to cope with the physical demands of the post including considerable physical effort, in all types of weather.

· A current clean LGV Driving Licence.

· A commitment to undertake regular LGV assessments in accordance with legislation.

Previous experience of driving a Large Goods Vehicle in an urban environment.
