The University Library
Cambridge University Libraries (CUL) is one of the world's best research libraries. Its Japanese collection is an outstanding resource supporting teaching, learning and research across the collegiate University both nationally and internationally (https://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/departments/japanese-collections).
Cambridge University Libraries wishes to appoint a Library Assistant to support in maintaining and developing the Japanese collection of the University Library, which is regarded as one of the most important collections of its kind outside of Japan.
About the Role
You will play an important role in maintaining the Japanese academic book and journal collection in the University Library. Working as an integral part of the Japanese and Korean Section team, you will assist with the acquisition, processing, and cataloguing of Japanese language materials.
Based in the Aoi Reading Room (https://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/departments/east-asian-reading-room), you will also assist Library users, visitors, and Library colleagues with fetching requests and answering general enquiries. You will play a key role in working closely with the Library's collections, including receiving and processing new materials and checking invoices, as well as supporting daily tasks (e.g. dealing with post, shelving, moving books in trolleys across the University Library). We are looking to fill this position on a part-time (20 hours per week), permanent basis. Due to the nature of the job, you will be expected to work on-site in the University Library.
What you will need
Higher-advanced proficiency in Japanese language is essential to perform the required tasks. You will also have excellent communication skills, time management and organisation skills with attention to detail and should be able to work under pressure, both independently and as part of the Japanese and Korean section team. Reporting to the Head of Japanese and Korean section, you will join a supportive network of library staff from across the Department of World Collections in the University Library.
