Job description

We are searching for a Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) to join Plymouth City Council. A LADO plays a crucial role in safeguarding children and young people from neglect and abuse by professionals, volunteers, and individuals in public office who have direct contact or responsibility for children. This position involves supporting and challenging agencies to collaborate effectively in safeguarding efforts, monitoring and auditing safeguarding practices across multi-agency work forces, and facilitating strategy meetings in response to professional allegations in individual cases. By ensuring consistency of multi-agency services and providing robust oversight and challenge when necessary, the LADO contributes significantly to meeting the safety and developmental needs of children and young people in Plymouth.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide advice and guidance about the behaviour of adults working with children and young people.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory obligations outlined in relevant legislation and guidelines, including Working Together March 2015, Education Act 2002, and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2015.'
  • Advise on policy development and meet OFSTED requirements regarding safeguarding.
  • Manage allegations against adults working with children and young people professionally or voluntarily.
  • Provide advice on safeguarding issues, including policy development and meeting OFSTED requirements, both internally and to partner and community/voluntary sector agencies.
  • Auditing activities demonstrating safe practice.
  • Timely communication of emerging issues to senior staff.
  • Annual reporting on LADO activities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant professional qualification in social work and a registration with SWE
  • Extensive experience in safeguarding children and young people, preferably within a Local Authority setting.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and complex cases with discretion and professionalism
