Job description

To work as a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a Speciality Interest in Vitreoretinal Surgery in the Ophthalmology Department working across a large multi-disciplinary department providing outpatient, surgical and emergency services at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire and St Cross Hospital, Rugby.
The post holder will join a team of 15 consultants and support the further development of the world class ophthalmology services at the Trust, working in collaboration with clinical colleagues in all subspecialities to provide an integrated service for patients.
This post will principally support the Vitreoretinal service where they will be joining one other vitreoretinal consultant. The post will be for 10 programmed activities per week, giving adequate time for SPA activity.
The department has a regular commitment to audit, with 10 sessions per year committed to audit and clinical governance. The department has an exemplary reputation for teaching and training. Teaching is an integral part of the unit, with doctors in training, medical students, Orthoptic and optometry students rotating through the department.
The applicant would be expected to take part in a three tier on call rota which currently is 1 in 13, third on call.
To provide, in collaboration with clinical colleagues, a comprehensive ophthalmology service to patients in the Coventry and Warwickshire. This will include ensuring that all appropriate waiting lists and waiting times are adhered to; that services are provided in an effective and efficient manner and that the principles of risk management and clinical governance are maintained at all times. To actively participate in the teaching and training of trainees and support and innovate changes within the department.
This post requires a special interest in vitreoretinal surgery management and the holder will work with another existing VR specialists to maintain and assist in the delivery of a comprehensive service in this field.

  • Development of services –Develop close collaborative links with clinicians working in his/her specialty and work to develop services provided to patients in these areas to the highest standards including the development of treatment protocols and guidelines.
  • Departmental audits –Participate in the departmental audit programme as well as participating in multidisciplinary audit relating to their area of clinical interest.
  • Clinical meetings –Participates in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
  • Supervise trainees –Supervise trainees working in the Department and will assist in their training and appraisal.
  • Performance and Annual Review scheme –Participate in the Trust Performance and Annual review scheme and be responsible for ensuring that they support the principles of revalidation by the General Medical Council.
  • Clinical governance, risk mitigation and clinical audits– The appointee will be committed to, and involved in, clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit – this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.
  • Trust Policies and Procedures– Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • Infection control practices– Take responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices.
  • Safeguarding –SafeguardingChildren and Vulnerable Adults is your responsibility. Familiarisation with and adherence to UHCW Safeguarding policies and Coventry and Warwickshire Safeguarding Board procedures is an essential requirement of all employees, as is the participation in related mandatory training.
