Job overview

Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport system. Working on multiple engineering mechanised rolling stock. From diesel plant to battery locomotives supporting the critical work that happens across the network. You will be trained in engineering principles in mechanical and electrical.

What will I be doing?

As an apprentice, your 3 year development programme will be made placement rotations and training. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:

Year 1

The first year is settling into London Underground. You will spend the first 3 months at our partner college in Enfield working on the fundamental engineering principles. You will then receive all the safety training and licencing to safely work on. After you have had all the safety training you start to be shadow the training maintainers at Ruislip Transplant depot rotating around the teams.

This is the time you will start to work on gathering knowledge for your qualifications. Also returning to college for short stints to achieve key engineering principal units. The qualifications are made up of knowledge questions and evidence of the work you have done.

Year 2

Your second year will be where you get hands on in the business learning from experienced train maintainers from focusing mainly at Ruislip on the Engineering Vehicles. However there will be the opportunity for short placements on passage train depots across the network and the Railway Engineering Workshop. You will be expected to follow teams building up your confidence and practical knowledge.

As you continue on college block release for knowledge and on the job, competency building this is a critical time to evidence and submit a large portion of your qualifications.

Year 3

With the fundamentals of engineering and the hands-on practical experience your final year is where you continue rotating around placements while completing your qualifications. At the end you will present your best work to an external engineering institute to give final sign off that you are a competent rolling stock engineering.

Where can this career take me?

  • Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into a Train maintainer position which could lead to further career development opportunities such as an Advanced Train Maintainer or Team leader positions.

  • At the end of the apprenticeship, you will be at an Engineering Technician professional standard while there is no requirement this can be built upon to achieve Chartership status in the future.

What training and support will you get?

You will be working towards aLevel 3qualification in Railway Engineering Technician (Rolling stock)

You will be required to attend Conel college on block release ranging from 5 weeks to 3 months.

Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager. You’ll also be connected to a ‘buddy’ who will be a more experienced apprentice from the scheme.
