Vehicle Technicians are responsible for the service, maintenance and repairing of vehicles placed under their care. They are responsible for identifying existing faults and detecting potential defects that could arise after further mileage. To fulfil these requirements, Vehicle Technicians have a wide range of practical day-to-day duties, such as:
- Visually checks, test drives or uses test equipment to diagnose engine and mechanical faults.
- Removes, dismantles, repairs and replaces defective parts and prepares new parts using appropriate tools.
- Reassembles, tests, adjusts and tunes the appropriate parts, systems or entire engine.
- Carries out routine maintenance checks on oil and air filters, brakes and other vehicle parts/systems.
- Diagnoses faults in electrical/electronic circuitry, removes faulty components and fits replacements.
- Checks condition of electrical/electronic systems and carries out servicing tasks.
- using pneumatic wrenches, lathes, jacks, hoists and computerised testing equipment
- advising customers of necessary repairs and giving an estimate of cost and time
- Schedule future maintenance sessions and advise motorists on good vehicle use
- Repair or replace broken or dysfunctional parts and fix issues (e.g. leaks)
- Keep logs on work and issues
- Maintain equipment and tools in good condition
- Discussing required repairs with customers.
- Fitting and servicing vehicle accessories, including immobilisers, alarms and stereos.
- Installs additional electrical amenities such as radio/CD players, aerials.
Repairs and services air conditioning, heating and engine-cooling systems
The Skills required are:
- Proven experience as auto mechanic
- Excellent knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic components of vehicles
- Working knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems and methods
- Ability to handle various tools (e.g. pliers) and heavy equipment (e.g. lift)
- Willingness to observe all safety precautions for protections against accidents, dangerous fluids, chemicals etc.
- Excellent physical condition
- Ability to maintain a professional appearance and provide friendly customer service.
- Interpret and transcribe data in order to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to use the diagnostic equipment.
