Job description

Skilled Machine Controllersare key to ensuring that production machinery is operated, controlled, monitored, and maintained at optimum levels. Supporting our Machine Technicians and taking on issues our Machine Operators flag up, this is a key role for us.

Do you have previous experience in machine operation or minor maintenance repairs? Have you maybe got CNC experience and want to move into a different industry? Have you overseen the duties of staff day to day?

Machine Controllers carry out minor repairs and basic preventative maintenance in order to enhance machine uptime and to achieve product quality standards. This role is based at our Orkie site, where root veg is processed and packaged through our state of the art machinery.

Our ideal candidate will:

~ Have machine operation and/or minor maintenance and repairs experience
~ Genuine interest in mechanics
~ Have some experience of delegating tasks to staff
~ Confident in using tools and skills to take on minor maintenance jobs
~ Be technology savvy
~ An eye for detail
~ Happy to work in a fast-paced, time focused environment
~ Have the physical capabilities for a role with lifting and manual working
~ Be able to work in an environment that can be on the cold side

Whilst we have over 30 different nationalities in our workforce, welcome applications from all, and can support with some language translation, a good understanding of English is important for this role.

The role involves

~ Pre Start Up Checks conducted and recorded
~ Ensuring colleagues using machinery have been provided with relevant training
~ Fault finding and mechanical issue solving or flagging up to others where required
~ Communication with supervisors and teams leads to understand targets
~ Delegate tasks to team members / machine operatives
~ Accurate and timely completion of all paperwork associated with the role
~ Minimising waste of raw and packaging materials
~ Checking packaging prior to production runs
~ Quality control checks on packaging and print
~ Supporting our technicians
~ Nurturing relationships with our engineering teams and other departments

Orkie - Sunday to Thursday Dayshift or Monday to Friday Backshift

Training for new starts including
* Food Safety Level 2, GMP training, Integrity & Segregation, HSE Policy, Manual Handling
* Other specific training and support on the job
* There is also the opportunity to request or be nominated for other training, provided by the Kettle Produce Academy

Many people come in at Machine Controller level who have a genuine interest in mechanics and experience in a related role. Next step is Machine Technician. This in turn can lead to opportunities to join the Engineering team, or move into other areas of the business.

Essentials to Consider

<> Can you prove your right to work in the UK? We will ask for original documentation. Passport or birth certificate and official proof of National Insurance Number. If you do not have these documents, we would not be able to offer you a start date. Birth Certificates and NI proof can easily be applied for, so we would ask you do this before sending in your application.

<> Non-UK Residents will be asked to supply their Home Office Share Code prior to being invited to interview.

<> We are a 364 days a year company, closed only on Christmas Day. During December and early January there are restrictions on holidays, and we work bank holidays including Boxing Day.

We are unable at the present time to offer shifts suitable for students with any restricted working hours during term time (usually 20 hours).

The Recruitment Process

You will then get the chance to tour our factory to see for yourself what goes on in the big green shed!
