The Team
The Alternatives business at Wellington Management manages a total AUM of $35bn, made up of 1,180+ client relationships. Within this, our Hedge Fund business is over $25bn, of which our Macro platform currently manages $8.5bn. The Hedge Fund business is made up of 57 team members globally, with over 45 specialised Portfolio Managers and Analysts, and 4 Macroeconomic ('Macro') Strategists. Each Portfolio Manager is responsible for generating investment ideas in their area of expertise, which is either market sector, strategy, or regionally based. The Macro Strategists provide dedicated analysis of the structural and cyclical factors that form expectations for monetary and fiscal policy.
The Position
We are currently seeking to recruit a Macro Strategist to join our Global Macro Strategy Group, which is a part of the Global Macro investment team within Wellington's Hedge Fund Group. The Group's mission is to provide a macroeconomic framework for investing, and more specifically, to translate macroeconomic research into top-down, alpha-generating investment insights that benefit Wellington's client portfolios.
The Macro Strategist will focus his/her research on Australia, New Zealand, China and Korea, and will be responsible for generating investment ideas for portfolios, and for contributing to the management of global portfolios for Wellington Management's clients around the world. As an active member of the Investment Platform, the this individual will be expected to provide themes and investment recommendations to Portfolio Managers by producing research and inputs to a range of investment processes, which is critical to investors throughout the firm globally. This role will be based in London.
Responsibilities
The general responsibilities of this role will include (but will not limited to):
Macroeconomic expertise - Monitoring, interpreting, and anticipating key trends and inflection points for economic growth, inflation, profits, currency, and economic policy. The Macro Strategist will have a deep understanding of the macro economy, as well as political developments and governance trends. The role will include analysis, forecasting and assessment of key factors impacting global economies (specifically of Australia, New Zealand, China and Korea). In addition, the ability to bring unique perspectives on both cyclical and structural factors is essential. Identifying key thematic trends in the economy is also important.
Investment acumen and passion - Supporting the mission of Global Macro Strategy at Wellington by focusing on global financial markets to translate macroeconomic research into investable ideas that are applicable across asset classes. The ideal candidate will initiate macro and targeted country research to generate investment ideas to support the firm's tactical and thematic investments. Passion for investing will lead the Macro Strategist to be a meaningful contributor to the strong macroeconomic dialogue and culture of the team and firm.
Collaboration and exceptional communication skills - The successful candidate will enjoy being an individual contributor to dialogue within the Global Macro Strategy team. The Macro Strategist will build strong, trusting relationships internally with colleagues to identify top-down investment opportunities for client portfolios. The ability to present macro views is critical, as is humility and a desire to address questions and learn from others, along with welcoming the benefits of diverse perspectives. The ability to clearly communicate (both verbally and in writing) insightful and accurate views, and investment opinions, is important. The ideal candidate should be committed to understanding the very rich, complex set of investment strategies offered by Wellington, and to establishing strong partnerships with the firm's community of sector specialists and portfolio managers.
Qualifications
The successful candidate is likely to have the following qualifications:
  • An advanced degree in Economics or related field (Finance/Business) from a well-regarded academic institution;
  • 6 - 10 years of relevant professional experience, Buy or Sell-side, ideally gained in a macroeconomic analysis role(s), e.g. Economist/Strategist;
  • Strong economist, with an appetite to overlap macro theme with market outcomes;
  • An understanding of, and some experience within, the APAC region (economies, politics and history) is desirable;
  • Some knowledge and experience of markets in Australia, New Zealand, China and Korea.
  • Demonstrable analytical skills, and knowledge of economics and financial markets with the ability to use and interpret macro data and create proprietary indicators to predict;
  • Ability to think creatively and flexibly;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written;
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced and team-oriented environment.
