Maintenance and Development Technician Apprenticeship at the University of Greenwich


University of Greenwich are looking for an enthusiastic and hard working Maintenance and Development Technician Apprentice to work with the Senior Technician to help construct and modify solids handling test rigs within the Wolfson Centre, as well as general Maintenance and technical support associated with a busy environment. The apprentice will be given the support to learn these skills to become proficient with the view to performing independently.


Apprenticeship summary:


  • Wage: £6.40 an hour, Automatic pay increase after one year on programme for 19+ year olds
  • Expected duration: 36 month duration
  • Working week: Monday to Friday, hours to be confirmed
  • Level 3 Education Technician Apprenticeship standard qualification
  • Working address: Central Ave, Gillingham, Chatham ME4 4TB

First year of the apprenticeship will be studying at college, you will be paid for this. After the first year of studying, you will be within the workplace and attending 1 day a week at college.


Team Specific:


  • Construction and assembly of laboratory rigs and instrumentation within the Wolfson Centre for consultancy, research and teaching activities
  • To support users of the test rigs and instrumentation with repair, troubleshooting and advice on modification.
  • To maintain, carry out fault diagnosis and repair a wide range of equipment within the laboratory areas, ensuring compliance to safety guidance are maintained to ensure legal compliance.
    To ensure the security and house-keeping of the laboratory areas are maintained to standards to ensure compliance with statutory and local safety expectations.
  • To manufacture artefacts and test specimens for teaching, research and consultancy using machine-tools, hand tools, welding and cutting equipment.
  • To inform the Centre’s Support Manager of requirements for consumable materials and components for the construction of test rigs and apparatus and to advise the Manager of suitable suppliers where necessary.
  • To develop a basic knowledge of software used within the School. To use email and to identify consumable and replacement parts as appropriate.
  • To operate access equipment and materials handling plant including forklift trucks, overhead crane, scissor lift and light commercial vehicles for the collection and distribution of materials as required within the School.
  • To facilitate statutory inspections for Pressure Equipment and Lifting Gear and also engage with risk assessments and inspections relating to HSAWA, PUWER, COSHH, DSEAR, Fixed Electrical Installations, PAT etc to ensure compliance
  • To carry out other duties as requested by the Centres management.

Generic:


  • Liaise with External organisations as appropriate, especially suppliers of equipment and materials and sub-contract manufacturers
  • Contribute to cross-functional team working with other FES Department staff
  • Liaise with FES Department staff as required

  • Continuously improve own knowledge and maintain own continuous professional development (CPD) to fill gaps in the skills base required
  • Maintain good timekeeping and manage own time to ensure work project schedules are met
  • Maintain a proactive approach to ensuring technical support needs of the Centre, both current and future, are met

This is a professional, demanding role within a tight-knit team that is internationally leading in its field, with an ambitious strategic plan for growth. The role holder will be expected to show flexibility in working arrangements, including working hours, to ensure that The Wolfson Centre delivers the required level of service to its international customers.
A very wide range of skills and knowledge will be needed to discharge all of the duties. Training in specialist areas such as bulk solids handling equipment function and maintenance, explosion protection, regulatory compliance etc. will be given where necessary.
A limited amount of travel off-site may be required for specialist training and/or to support our consultants working in the field.

We specialise in helping industry solve bulk materials handling problems (powders, particulates) through consultancy services and research collaboration. We also provide training in a wide range of bulk materials handling issues to hep handlers understand the problems that can occur and how to avoid or solve them.
