Maintenance and Operations Engineering TechnicianLevel 3 Apprenticeship

A career that will deliver change. Together, we can help Britain achieve net zero.

Join our Level 3Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship and you can make an immediate impact, powering the nation today whilst helping to build a sustainable energy future for tomorrow.

"The reason for choosing this apprenticeship was because I enjoy being hands on and have an interest in the nuclear industry. My time staying away from home is one of the highlights, as it’s given me some freedom and taught me a lot of life skills. It also gives you the chance to make new friends and experience things you wouldn’t normally. I have found the chance to get back onto site and experience the power station really valuable. This has given me the chance to put what I have learnt into context and to have an insight into station life”

Emily, Apprentice

What is the Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Programme:

We’re recruiting for apprentices to join our Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician training programme working as part of one of our nuclear power stations in the UK.

During your apprenticeship you’ll be looking to make an impact – using your skills, knowledge and passion to achieve great things. So how about taking on the challenge of beating climate change?

We’re offering a four-year programme that focuses on the hands-on skills required to maintain our power stations. During the scheme, you’ll develop specialist skills to work in the Maintenance department at one of our Nuclear power stations.

What salary and benefits are we offering you?

  • Salary of £14,495 plus excellent benefits
  • Accommodation and meal costs covered in your first two years if you do not live locally to Bridgwater, including a number of paid return journeys home
  • 28 days’ annual leave
  • Flexible benefits package
  • Wellbeing, physical and mental health support services
  • Outward Bound programme – team building excursion prior to starting in September
  • A dedicated Early Careers Programme Lead for your scheme, as well as the support of a Line Manager and Buddy

At EDF, everyone’s welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself. We’re committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application, making adjustments as you need.

We’ll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.

If you’re passionate about tackling climate change, our Apprenticeship programme offers you the opportunity to develop an exciting career whilst helping progress the UK towards a Net Zero future.

Training, development and support for you:

In the first two years of the programme you’ll be based at the National College for Nuclear, delivered through Bridgwater and Taunton College, Somerset.

You’ll have access to state-of-the-art nuclear training facilities including a virtual reality environment, computer-equipped training rooms, recreation and collaboration spaces, sports facilities and student accommodation. It’s here that you’ll get your introduction to engineering and develop a strong skills foundation.

As well as the technical side, we’ll help you develop the behaviours essential to the safe operation of our power stations. Part of this programme also covers the development of life skills, like confidence and communication.

During your final two years you’ll be based at your EDF location. You’ll work alongside and learn from qualified professionals, developing your knowledge and skills at the same time as completing your academic and vocational qualifications.

You'll also have the support of a Station Apprentice Coordinator to offer guidance whilst you learn about working on a power station.

Upon completion of your apprenticeship, you’ll be awarded a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician (MOET) Apprenticeship Certificate. By this point, you’ll also have gained a BTEC Level 3 as well as an excellent selection of practical skills. It’s everything you need to start your career and there may also be the option to progress onto further education such as an HNC.

In the future, you could take on people management responsibilities and develop into a Maintenance Team Leader. Or you could also choose to pursue a technical route and take your first steps towards becoming an Engineer.

Where you’ll work:

You’ll be based at the National College for Nuclear Southern Hub in Somerset, for the first two years, and we can provide you with accommodation here if you do not live locally. You’ll then be based at your EDF location for years 3 and 4 which will be Hinkley Point C Power Station.

To join our team you’ll need:

  • Five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or Grade 4 and above in the new GCSE grading structure), National 5 or equivalent, including maths, English and two science or technical subjects
  • A talent and passion for practical subjects and activities
  • You'll have the ability to work in a team and independently, as well as being able to balance the responsibilities of study and work
  • Desire to learn and develop your skills
  • Willingness to relocate as required
  • To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.

Our Assessment Centre will be held virtually on Tuesday the 19th of March.
