Job description

Is organisation and problem solving ‘Your Thing’?
We are looking for someone with excellent organisation and problem solving skills to work with our Control and Engineering TrainCare Centre teams to lead the process of running a healthy fleet and manage any unit failures as quickly as possible, in order to minimise any disruption to our customers as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Connecting millions of people and communities across the North is our mission. With 2,500 trains a day, we connect people to jobs, friends, family, and the wonders of the North.
We're improving rail travel, enhancing the experience on board and at stations. Customers are at the heart of our business as we improve performance and create a better way to go.
We're driving economic value and sustainable growth for the North and its people. Our commitment to the environment means reducing our impact and enhancing the world around us.
Make a difference. Make it last. Make it yours. Make it easy. Make it happen. These are our values.
Ready to make them yours? Join us on this journey.
About the role
As a Maintenance Controller, you’ll play a vital role to work closely with Northern Control and the Engineering TrainCare Centre (TCC) to deliver the Northern train plan. You’ll be responsible for leading the process of monitoring the health of the fleet and ensure that units in traffic are reported and managed in line with the Safety Management Systems Procedures. You will also manage any unit failures with the required expertise to identify and solve problems rapidly to minimise the disruption to Northern customers and deliver key performance indicators in line with Engineering requirements.
You will report to our Fleet Control Manager to ensure we deliver the key performance indicators for the Engineering function.
It’s an exciting time to join our engineering team, as we are transforming and developing skillsets, to help us get the right people, on the right units, at the right time. You’ll need to work a range of shifts, from the early hours of the morning and including nights, plus weekends and Bank Holidays.
If this sounds like your thing, we'd love to hear from you.
This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:
Proactive management of the fleet health process, to ensure that vehicles are presented in service in their optimum condition start of day for the customer. Monitoring any potential issues using our remote condition monitoring systems and reporting such issues by co-ordinating with fleet planning, TCC’s and station staff, as necessary formulating plans to complete the necessary repairs.
Ensuring that all defects are recorded in an accurate manner through the fleet database and the communication of timely information
Providing technical guidance to other members of the Northern team
Coordinating with our train crew in order to prioritise and maintain our fleet, by responding to reported train faults
Travelling on our trains that have problematic faults and attending failures in traffic, as necessary
About You:
We expect you to be qualified with a level 3 NVQ in engineering or a recognised apprenticeship, or higher and have the experience and practical ability of Northern’s and Third Party Fleet. What’s really important is an ability to work as part of a team and to be able to think on your feet, in sometimes challenging situations.
We’re also looking for the following:
Engineering experience, with the knowledge and experience with Northern’s trains
The ability to lead and team and the targets and use your initiative when situations arise
Excellent communication skills, to be able to understand technical information and negotiate where necessary
The ability to prioritise and be adaptable under pressure
Confidence to build rapport with a wide variety of people and teams
Experience in diagnosing and solving problems
And don’t forget that our selection process includes a safety critical medical assessment, that covers general health, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol testing.
Our Benefits:
Opportunities to progress and grow
Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependents, can travel for free right across our full network of services. *Certain eligibility criteria will apply.
75% discount with other Train Operating Companies - after 2 years with us, you’ll also get discounted travel on many other rail services in the UK and Europe.
Defined Benefit Pension Scheme
A generous holiday entitlement
