Job description

About the job

The development and construction of sustainable district heating plants is one of the pillars of Vattenfall’s drive to ‘fossil freedom’. We provide affordable, climate-smarter living for hundreds of thousands of people. As our manager Discipline Engineering, you will play a crucial role in the engineering of dozens of energy centres, leveraging the latest technologies. Are you ready to build and coach an international, multi-disciplinary team of experienced engineers? Join us and help accelerate the energy transition across the UK, Sweden and the Netherlands.

What you’re going to do
Given the developments in the district heating business, we are in the process of strengthening our in-house Engineering department, to which you will contribute. This year, you will build and coach a new international team of some ten civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation & control engineers. In the coming years, you will further grow this team, as the number of district heating projects continue to increase. You and your team will be working from any of our offices in the Netherlands, Sweden or the UK. To meet your team members’ needs, you will challenge, inspire and coach them. You will also provide them with personalised training and development. In addition, you will be creating team cohesion in an open, informal and supportive culture, organising and facilitating team meetings and gatherings.

Our multi-million projects harness cutting-edge technologies. These range from heat pumps, 150 MW electrical boilers and geothermal energy to hydrogen and green gas production and combustion. Your team members will be assuming discipline lead roles in projects that are largely carried out by contractors and external engineers. Outsourcing engineering work is part of your remit. Staying on top of the latest technological developments, you will provide guidance and support to your team and external engineers. You will also develop and maintain Vattenfall standards and guidelines. And you will monitor and assess the technical integrity of the deliverables in terms of quality and compliance.

You will join the various project steering groups, driving project performance from an engineering perspective. In these groups, you will be the vital link between higher management and your in-house and external engineers. In addition, you will be a member of the 5-strong Engineering Department management team. Contributing to the performance of the department as a whole, you and your fellow managers will exchange ideas, monitor the progress of projects and help develop our learning organisation. We are an internationally diverse team and share the ambition to accelerate the energy transition.

Your profile

Embracing the latest technologies, you thrive on working on international, multidisciplinary sustainable heating projects. You harness your communication skills to interact with internal and external stakeholders, from engineers to decision makers. And you know how to build and motivate teams, inspiring experienced team members to deliver the best possible results. For you, international travelling to visit projects and meet team members is an incentive.

You also have:

  • An MSc in civil, mechanical, electrical, process or controls engineering.
  • Demonstrable experience of situational management, as you need a keen understanding of when to change your management style depending on the persons and situations you’re dealing with.
  • Knowledge of tollgate project management frameworks.
  • An eagerness to learn about and implement the latest renewable energy technologies.
