About us
The City of London Corporation is the City of opportunities, innovation, impact and change. Our people are professionals from all walks of life, dedicated to maintaining a vibrant and thriving City. But our work touches life beyond the Square Mile. It also contributes to a diverse and sustainable London as well as a globally successful UK.
Join us and, taking responsibility for the security of London’s famous Smithfield Market, you’ll do more than ensure the safety of people working in, visiting and living near this historic site. You’ll help secure the future of one of the City’s best-loved, thriving business areas.
The role
Supervising, managing and training the Sergeants, Constables and other members of the Market Constabulary, you’ll ensure the 24/7 delivery of a high-quality security service. The Market Constabulary’s work includes protecting property, preventing crime, enforcing the market Code of Practice, regulating market activity, and making sure it complies with health and safety regulations. Due to market operating hours the core hours for this post are 4am – 12pm.
As the health and safety lead on site, you’ll investigate and report any accidents or hazards and recommend preventative action. Developing plans to ensure the Market Constabulary can deal with severe weather or any major incidents, you’ll lead on matters relating to counter terrorism and demonstrations that would impact on market operations. Your responsibilities will also include managing the CCTV system, overseeing enforcement action and liaising with the City of London/Metropolitan Police.
About you
You’ll bring either a formal qualification in security management, professional security body recognition, or extensive experience in a security/safety management role covering people, places or events. You should also have a Level 3 in Health and Safety, like the NEBOSH National General Certificate or other recognised qualification, such as IOSH Managing Safely. Whatever your current level of qualification, you should be ready to work towards enhanced certification. We expect you to have SIA training, Certified First Aid at Work and Fire Safety training too, or to be willing to do the training.
We’re looking for your ability to manage a large security team, along with experience of delivering complex security-related projects. With this you should have experience of carrying out accident and incident investigations, and a good technical understanding of security systems. It’s also important that you’re flexible, to attend and manage any incidents and emergencies at short notice outside of normal working hours.
You have the benefit of an average salary pension, a generous annual leave provision, access a range of exclusive discounts through our Reward Gateway. Along with use of our employee assistance programme and the option of medical insurance and BUPA dental care.
