Metal Shop Supervisor

Hours: Monday to Thursday 07:30am 16:15pm & Friday 07:30am 13:30pm
Salary: Up to £35,000 per annum
Gap personnel, operating as an employment agency, are currently recruiting for a Metal Shop Supervisor in Exeter on a permanent contract.
Reporting to the Production Manager, the successful candidate will provide supervision, training and development of Metal Shop personnel to ensure a seamless provision of service, and support / manage the Team Leaders in their daily roles and duties and provide cover for the Production Manager in their absence.
Acting as an ambassador for the organisation, you will seek to instil a positive culture and enjoy coaching and supporting your team for both individual and company-wide success.
Duties & responsibilities:
- Ensure that product quality is maintained and that all manufactured components are manufactured within tolerances stated.
- Manage the rework of non-conforming items and ensure stock control activities are monitored.
- Monitor and progress work within the department in line with scheduled requirements.
- Allocate labour as required to meet the production schedule.
- Ensure all daily check sheets for machine maintenance, cleaning, health and safety and process control are completed and verified.
- Report any maintenance issues within the department to the Metal Shop Production Manager and Facilities Manager to organize contractors where appropriate.
- Supervision, training and development of personnel to ensure seamless provision of service.
- Monitor and control attendance and holidays within the department ensuring that output is maintained.
- Conduct essential personnel functions including; return to work interviews, shop floor inductions, maintain time and attendance records, disciplinary measures, team appraisals, interviews and recruitment.
- Initiate and lead continuous improvement activities and support 5S and lean activities.
- Provide feedback on prototype and new products to identify opportunities for best practice and ease of manufacture.
- Conduct health and safety walk arounds and document and action any issues identified and ensure staff are working in a safe environment, that personnel training, PPE and risk assessment records are kept up to date.
Person Specification:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Computer literate with good knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Management experience in a sheet metal manufacturing role would be desirable.
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings and use a range of measuring equipment.
- IOSH, Lean, 5S and Six Sigma training would be an advantage.
- CNC experience or a mechanical background would be an advantage.
- You must be a team player who is keen to develop others.
- Ability to engage with the workforce and deliver strategic initiatives and manage change.
- Willing to learn and to lead by example.
