Salary: Up to £55,500 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Contract type: Permanent
Location: London (one / two days per week in our office.)
Due to the hybrid nature of the teams, we require the successful candidate to be based in the above BBC office to work from the office one / two days per week.

Job Introduction


The Digital Distribution Monitoring team provide the core and shared observability and alerting systems for BBC Online. With record breaking audiences coming to the BBC to follow live Breaking News as well as events such as Glastonbury and Wimbledon, our services are essential to the performance and uptime of many products at the BBC, regardless of geography, technology and connectivity, spanning both internal data centres and cloud locations.
We’ve recently introduced InfluxDB based metrics collection, with Grafana for visualisation and Alerta for alerting, which works alongside custom solutions for active monitoring of the variety of pages and products that comprise the BBC’s Online presence.

Interview Process


Interview process
  • Technical task for shortlisted candidates – approx. 1.5 to 2 hours of scenario based coding exercise using Python paired with a technical assessor – No advanced preparation required.
  • Virtual interview – approx. 1.5 to 2 hours of technical and values-based questions

Main Responsibilities


As a Software Engineer within the Monitoring team, you will have a role in shaping, refining and delivering the technical direction of the team, developing and representing our best practice with plenty of opportunity to bring your own experiences and ideas for the future roadmap, and to collaborate with other teams at the BBC.
You will be engaged in all aspects of SDLC, including architecture, design, specs, tests, development, and delivery. You will also be a passionate and experienced engineer with a background in either software or systems engineering ideally Devops and be keen to enhance your skills in a variety of both open source and commercial services and systems, including observability and Alerting services and systems. You will be helping to build, improve and support these services. This means working with AWS, API, Python, CI/ CD, influx, Grafana, test suites etc that support this effort.
We would look for you to be an active participant in fostering a learning culture throughout the organisation through active dissemination of knowledge, mentoring and inspiring other members of the Monitoring team.
You’re rigorous in the way you build, develop, test and support features and committed to making the product you’re helping to build the best it can possibly be.

Are you the right candidate


Specific areas we are interested in terms of experience, familiarity, and expertise are:
  • Knowledge of the software development and software testing lifecycles with reasonable experience in language Python.
  • Experience in AWS services including EC2, S3, SNS, SQS, Lambda, Cloudwatch, ELB, NLB, Route53.
  • Linux operating systems, primarily Redhat Linux and similar (CentOS, Rocky, Amazon Linux).
  • Continuous Integration, Delivery, and Deployment systems and practices - good knowledge of CI/CD & cloud technologies (such as AWS) to implement deployments and following best practices.
  • Various types of testing including unit, acceptance, behavioural, integration, and load testing.
  • Design, implementation, and support of large-scale projects, with critical infrastructure placement.
  • Working in an Agile development environment
  • Optional: Familiarity with our current technologies including: Telegraf, InfluxDB, Kapacitor, Alerta, Grafana, Consul, LibreNMS
  • Optional: Solid domain knowledge of the different technologies required in each step of the chain for observability/ monitoring and alerting
  • Optional: Network aspects such as HTTP, TLS, DNS, SNMP
