About IT Services

IT Services at the University of Manchester is a vibrant and fast-moving department, we focus on delivering excellent customer service and quality services for our staff, students and researchers.

The Team

The IT Operations Centre, (ITOC), is an evolving team within IT Services and are responsible for the monitoring of system health, the availability and capacity of live services, and are accountable for the execution of disaster recovery and continuity of critical services. The ITOC also provides monitoring, escalation, intervention, operational maintenance and support, dashboards and reporting functions for all University services and infrastructure.

The Role

The University operates one of the largest academic networks in Europe, the ITOC Network Operations Centre (NOC) Analyst is key to ensuring we have a robust network by contributing to the monitoring tools and knowledge base for it. The role will implement and manage key network monitoring tools for the University and ensure documentation is up to date and accurate. These solutions will enable the University to monitor and react proactively to meet business capabilities and drive its targeted business outcomes.

The ITOC NOC Analyst will provide analysis and designs around the development of the network tooling solutions within IT Services. The role will help drive the monitoring of the network by evaluating tools and dashboards working with the wider Technology team and liaise with our vendors and partners to ensure service level agreements are met and root cause analysis investigations are completed.

The post holder will help develop the Network Operation Centre monitoring tools and platform for the University which has one of the largest academic networks in Europe. You'll be working with our ITOC and Networks teams to implement new technology and services to ensure the delivery of our vital network services.

The Person

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience of leading the development of network monitoring tools and dashboards, ensuring tools are utilised to their maximum potential and fit within a heterogeneous IT ecosystem.
  • Experience in the use of network management systems software and appropriate analysis equipment to collect routine network load statistics, model performance and create reports, including proposals for improvement, to senior management.
  • The creation and maintenance of network documentation and diagrams.
  • Broad technical knowledge across a range of technologies including networks, infrastructure, and applications.
  • Corrects malfunctions, calling on other experienced colleagues and external resources if required, and initiates action to ensure best use is made of available network assets.
  • Initiates action to maintain or improve installation procedures and standards within area of authority, recognising issues that need to be escalated.
  • Uses network management systems software to create ad-hoc network models and complex network statistical analyses.
  • Post holders are required to familiarise themselves with the University's Equality and Diversity policies and to actively support these wherever possible.
