Job description

One to One Tutor - English Outwood Academy Hasland Hall

Chief Executive Officer: Martyn Oliver
Head of School: Ian Cooper
Outwood Academy Hasland Hall is an 11-16 academy based in the large, friendly, Derbyshire town of Chesterfield, near Derby and Sheffield.

Part of the Outwood Family since 2021, we are a welcoming and supportive academy, with a relentless determination to provide the very best education for every child. We place students at the centre of everything we do, with a focus on creating a culture of success and a positive climate for learning.

The Academy became part of the Outwood Family of Schools in 2021 and as part of the Outwood Grange Academies Trust we offer our colleagues extensive CPD opportunities and are committed to the Outwood vision of putting students first, raising standards and transforming lives.

We believe we are on a journey to Outstanding. Help to take us to the next level.

The Outwood Family of Schools pride ourselves on fully supporting colleagues within the Family both professionally and personally.
We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.
As a founding Trust of the National Institute of Education (NIoT), we will actively invest in your future through working closely with the Outwood Institute of Education and NIoT to offer access to a wide range of CPD opportunities, with all teaching staff receiving a minimum of two hours of CPD each week.
We also offer a generous employment package with a whole host of staff benefits, including family friendly policies, enhanced occupational benefits available (such as maternity, adoption and parental leave) with no qualifying period, funded CPD for qualifications up to and including Masters level plus other exclusive benefits including a partnership with car leasing company, Synergy.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.
If you share our vision, join our family.

The English Department

The English Department at Outwood Academy Hasland Hall is friendly, welcoming and incredibly supportive. It is made up of 7 teachers and 4 one-to-One Tutors all with a wide range of experience and skills. Staff work collaboratively and have created an environment where expertise is shared and where everyone feels supported. There are many opportunities for staff to develop a range of career opportunities within the school and the trust, making the English Department at Outwood Academy Hasland Hall a rewarding place to work.

Teaching takes place in the department’s seven classrooms with every teacher having their own dedicated room. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team. All classrooms have either interactive whiteboards or large television screens. There is a library with a wide range of fiction and non-fiction to support students’ reading needs which is run by a full-time librarian.

The department has created a challenging and exciting KS3 curriculum with reading at its heart. The curriculum has been redesigned to enable texts to be used to foster a love of reading and learning. These texts celebrate diversity and we encourage students to think a about the world beyond Chesterfield. The school has invested a lot of money in novels which are up to date, relevant and which deal with a range of issues faced by young people today. A wide range of poetry is also embedded in all units of work in years 7, 8, and 9. Every student at KS3 has one dedicated weekly reading lesson where the teacher reads to them to model fluency, intonation and encourage the enjoyment of shared reading.

There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This includes Accelerated Reader and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. The specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers.

As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of expert English directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise.

We look forward to working with you, whether you are an aspiring ECT or an experienced teacher.

If you are interested in joining our team, please contact Jo McDonald, Head of English (j.mcdonald@hasland hall.outwood.com) who would be pleased to tell you more, either by email or telephone (01246 273 985), and we would be delighted to welcome you on a visit if you would like to see us in person.
