Operations and Planning Engineer

  • Closing at: Jun 26 2024 at 23:55 BST

About the role

Base Location: Perth

Salary: £62,324 - £71,370 + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available

SSE Networks Transmission (SSENT) is enjoying a period of rapid growth in response to the significant development in renewable generation across the north of Scotland, and progression towards the UK climate change targets.

To meet this expansion, we have exciting opportunities for Transmission Operations and Planning Engineers at the Transmission Control Centre in Perth.  The team is responsible for ensuring all short-term and long-term programmes of planned operational and outage works have been efficiently coordinated with all key internal and external stakeholders, whilst maintaining acceptable levels of network security, and supporting NGESO in reducing operational constraint costs.  Outage Plans are approved by the GB Electricity System Operator (NGESO), ready for the Control Room to manage the real-time operations.

The roles support delivery of key strategic reinforcement projects and connections, including new HVDC systems, FACTS devices, and large offshore windfarm connections.

We have opportunities for roles in two distinctive planning periods.  Firstly, as a Current-Year Planning Engineer, covering the current working year from day-ahead to year-end, working in close collaboration with the Control Room Engineers.  And secondly, as a Future-Years Planning Engineer, from 1 to 10 years ahead, working with stakeholders across the wider Business to coordinate and prepare all future years’ operational and outage programmes.

The key responsibilities for both roles include the following:

- Plan outage programmes for delivery of transmission projects, network maintenance, and telecoms works, to ensure transmission system operations are safe, reliable and secure.

- Review project stage-by-stage single line diagrams and site layout diagrams to assess network outages required during project execution.

- Support development and review of the Business’s future years outage plans, ensuring alignment and agreement with NGESO and the other GB Transmission Owners.

- Conduct network studies using PSS®E software, in current year and future years timescales, to inform upcoming outage programmes, address technical queries, and ensure compliance with technical and security standards.

- Provide operational planning support, including analysis of network disturbance and fault events, and issue of operational guidelines on new network technologies.

Appointment to either a Current-Year Planning Engineer role, or a Future-Years Planning Engineer role, will be open to an applicant’s particular area of interest, and subject to their background and experiences.

The roles seek experienced Operations or Planning Engineers, however there may be opportunities to build experience in the role and to follow a development / training programme to progress to the job grading.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- Degree level qualification in electrical engineering, although qualifications to HNC level in electrical engineering (minimum) with the relevant background will be considered.

- Sound knowledge and understanding of electrical power systems and the related network design standards, although there will be opportunities to develop your technical skills within the team.

- Technical knowledge and communication skills to engage with project managers, engineers, stakeholders, and the National Grid Electricity System Operator to optimise the outage programmes and find solutions during changing conditions.

- Enthusiasm and ability to integrate with key stakeholders, the skills to interact with the Delivery Teams, and the confidence to make key decisions.
