GRADE: ML2/SB1
SALARY: £48,048 - £59,514 per annum
ROLE TYPE: Hybrid
HOURS: 37 hours per week

Working in this role you will lead the development of a proactive safety culture within the operational teams. You will provide professional and technical operational safety advice, guidance, support and leadership to the East and North East Regional Directors, Heads of Trains and Stations, Operations Managers, their teams and others across the business.

About the role:

Working in this role you'll also focus on training, coaching, and assisting local managers to develop their safety awareness and to ensure the effective implementation of safety management system procedures within their teams. This will include assessing the competence of driver team managers and others who are responsible for managing driver competence.
You will take a key role in shaping the strategy, future direction and implementation of operational standards, methods of work and general operational safety within Northern. You will actively partake in investigations, leading on them where required, fostering a culture of learning from events - ensuring the development and implementation of actions and recommendations.
As the Operational Standards Manager you'll develop and support implementation of operational best practice taking into account and participating within wider industry developments and updates to rail industry standards and the Rule Book. You will develop, review, and implement operational SMSPs including consulting with stakeholders (such as Driver Team Managers and Trade Union colleagues) on changes.
There will be the opportunity to develop management, leadership and influencing skills, to undertake technical training and lead project-based tasks as well as supporting the other Operational Standards Managers within the team broadening your operational experience and knowledge.
About you:

You need to be an outgoing, confident and an extremely well organised individual.
You should be an effective communicator, who is able to effectively influence both peers and senior managers.
We are looking for applicants who have (or are willing to work towards*) the following:
    • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent
    • Level 3 Competence Assessor and completion of Company Instructor Course.
    • Accredited safety auditor course
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of rail operations and rules and regulations and Northern SMSPs
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of non-technical skills, operation risk and error prevention techniques.
You must have or be able to hold a Green Cab Pass
You must be prepared to travel around the Northern network and visit all locations where operational activity takes place.
This role is Safety Critical
You must hold a train driver licence and certificate and have held competence in driving (or a combination of driving and driver management experience) for 4 of the previous 5 years.
