Job description


We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our rapidly expanding and friendly department. You will be based in the main Ophthalmic Imaging department within the Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary at Royal Wolverhampton Hospital NHS Trust but may also cover our satellite clinics at Cannock Eye Centre & Ashmore Park Medical Centre. As well as working in a team you will also cover your own clinics. There is opportunity for working earlies, lates and weekends.
You will ideally be top of band 4 with a minimum of 3 years’ ophthalmic imaging experience, or a band 5 clinical photographer/Ophthalmic Photographer looking for a different challenge. You will have highly developed hand/eye coordination for specialist imaging techniques used in ophthalmic imaging along with knowledge of medical terminology to interpret clinical imaging requests accurately and a good level of computer literacy.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
experience within Ophthalmic Imaging setting required for:
Use complex scan protocols to best demonstrate clinical conditions and aid diagnosis, including setting appropriate scan position according to diagnosis that can be used for future follow-up visits
Use digital handheld camera in accordance with Institute of Medical Illustrators protocols & Westminster scales accurately documenting & recording images of the eyes & face
Use specialist imaging equipment including colour fundus camera, Optos widefield fundus camera, Pentacam, AS-OCT and slit lamp camera to best demonstrate the clinical condition and aid diagnosis
Work in a variety of general & specialty clinics inc. Medical Retinae, Corneal, VR, AMD, Diabetic, Glaucoma Screening, Paediatrics, Uveitis, Naevus, Laser, Oculoplastic, Minor Procedures, ED/Acute Referral Centre
Participate in training new and unqualified staff ensuring high standards are constantly met
Support the Ophthalmic Research Consultant and team in various Ophthalmic clinical trials
Produce teaching and publication material as requested to support the Ophthalmology service
Provide technical support and advice to ophthalmic nursing and medical staff as required
Ensure all equipment is used and maintained to manufacturers and Trust policy
Work with manufacturers to maintain efficiency and clinical effectiveness of imaging systems
Assist lead photographer with development of an imaging library.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
Carry out routine Fundus Fluorescein Angiography using highly specialised equipment to aid the clinical diagnosis.
Undertake general imaging of the retina for clinical records.
Carry out Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) using the appropriate scan protocols to accurately demonstrate the condition.
Undertake anterior segment, digital slit lamp and DSLR photography to support the clinical diagnosis.
Perform imaging tests such as Indo-cyanine Green Angiography to evaluate the choroid.
Support the Ophthalmic Research Consultant and their team in various Ophthalmic clinical trials.
Produce teaching and publication material as requested to support the Ophthalmology service.
Provide technical support and advice to ophthalmic nursing and medical staff as required.
Ensure that all equipment is used and maintained to manufacturers and Trust policy.
Work with the manufacturers to maintain the efficiency and clinical effectiveness of the imaging systems.
Assist the lead photographer with the development of an imaging library.
Managerial Administration and Responsibilities
Uphold the quality standards of this service and undertake relevant quality control procedures.
Maintain accurate records for all clinics undertaken and accurate patient records for all procedures performed
Assist with the training and supervision of new and trainee staff within the imaging service.
Assist with the backing up of all system data.
To ensure safe working environment is maintained in accordance to Trust Policy.
Liaise with medical, professional and clerical staff in all areas relating to patient care
Education and Research
Training of junior photographers, unqualified Ophthalmic Photographers, Optometrists and medical staff involved in the imaging service.
Work towards and gain reading centre research accreditation.
Participate in professional imaging meetings to ensure national developments are introduced to the service.
Comply with all departmental policies, standards & work to agreed protocols.
