Pay Range
$220,890 - $283,692 annually
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for an Optics Supply Manager for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF&PS) programs. You will be responsible for the management and oversight of optics supply and processes, and component engineer production groups, in support of laser and experimental systems within the NIF and Optics Processing Facilities. You will be responsible for managing industrial partnerships and internal customer interfaces, as well as strategies for sustainability of manufacturing equipment and processes at vendor sites and data integrity validation for optics inventory. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
In this role, you will

  • Provide advanced technical leadership and supervision of optics supply group, management of $17M annual budget to ensure critical optics supplies are maintained for successful execution of NIF&PS laser programs.
  • Serve as Liaison between NIF upper management, the Engineering staff, Operations Teams, Designers, Coordinators, and Technicians to ensure appropriate engineering rigor and configuration management consistent with developed structure.
  • Collaborate with and provide technical leadership to a multi-disciplinary team of experimental support personnel including scientists, engineers, operators, and technicians, including hiring and technical mentorship, career growth and team building.
  • Lead, foster, and serve as the primary interface for over three dozen industrial partnerships in support of optics for NIF&PS, as well as relevant working groups such as the National Heavy Water Users group.
  • Manage partnerships with LLNL procurement on contracts with optics supply vendors, as well as LLNL property for oversite of $300M for government furnished equipment and facilized manufacturing space, including property abandonment or retirement.
  • Exercise independent judgment to provide solutions to highly complex issues/problems where a high degree of ambiguity exists around techniques and approaches. Solutions require in-depth analysis of multiple tangible and intangible factors.
  • Perform high level goal setting and strategic planning, direct the accomplishment of project/program goals and objectives, determine methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria, and ensure that deliverables are met.
  • Validate data integrity of NIF large optics inventory, including metrics to monitor trends and inform decision making.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge in science or engineering as it relates to implementation of integrated, complex, and largescale systems.
  • Highly advanced knowledge of electro-optics, large optical systems, optics processing and metrology, laser alignment, or diagnostics..
  • Significant experience managing and executing an integrated safety management system.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage personnel conflicts and maintain high morale in a demanding and dynamic environment.
  • Experience leading a team and/or group effectively in a fast-paced, high pressure, complex, multidisciplinary team environment, working across organizational boundaries, including having knowledge of supervision, budget, policies, and processes.
  • Leadership skills for leading and managing independently working multidisciplinary teams of 10 or more employees.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors and vendors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Highly advanced knowledge of laser physics or large laser systems.
