Job description

You will be working in an environment where there is a strong emphasis on teamwork, supervision and CPD, and you will be responsible for individual and group interventions, risk and cognitive assessments, facilitating staff reflective practice sessions and designing and delivering training.

As a clinical/forensic Psychologist, you will have experience and knowledge in carrying a clinical caseload, including assessing service users with complex needs, and designing and delivering specialist psychological treatment within complex care services.

Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, you will ensure the people you are working with are fully engaged in their care pathway and will provide support to the clinical team, including both direct interventions and the delivery of staff training programmes. 


Your responsibilities

  • To provide psychological assessments based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological (and neuropsychological) tests, self-report measures, rating scales direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in their care.
  • To formulate plans for the psychological treatment and/or management of client’s mental health needs based upon an appropriate conceptual framework, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.
  • To implement a range of psychological interventions for individuals within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
  • To develop and manage group work programmes and innovative therapeutic approaches. To ensure that appropriate outcome measures are in place.
  • To ensure that Psychology practices in the specified area of service maintain the highest standards of professional practice and ethics, complying with clinical governance standards at all times.
  • Work effectively as a team member, ensuring the timely delivery of psychological assessment and interventions within the service area.
  • Take appropriate action where concerns are raised with regards to the performance or conduct of others.  
  • Promote and safeguard the well-being and interests of all clients, employees, and visitors.
  • Ensuring the confidentiality, security, and accuracy of data and information and compliance with Regulatory guidelines and statutory requirements. 
  • Maintain and evidence standards of competence as defined by the HCPC and BPS. 
  • To supervise Assistant Psychologists, as directed by the Lead Psychologist. 

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Possess competence in assessing, formulating and working therapeutically with people in the service area.
  • Effectively communicate, at both written and oral level, complex and sensitive information, taking into account the recipients.
  • Have an up to date knowledge of legislation and its implications for the profession and the client groups we work with.
  • Be able to identify and proactive resolve problems and challenges within the service. 
  • Have registration with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist and Charterable status with the British Psychological Society.
  • Experience (either pre-training, on training, or subsequently) of working with clients with complex needs that are relevant to the population in the service area.

Join the multidisciplinary team at Wellesley Hospital providing care to men and women with mental health conditions in a modern and purpose-built hospital with low and medium secure environments.

The unit is one of NHS England’s pilot sites to test new approaches to delivering mental health care and works alongside local NHS trusts and private care providers in the South West.

Wellesley Hospital is conveniently located near Wellington, close to the M5 and commutable from Taunton, Exeter, Yeovil and surrounding areas.
