This is a new position required due to the continued and rapid expansion of the school.
The Mark Way School is a special school designated to cater for the needs of young people aged 11-16 with moderate learning difficulties. The school ethos means we understand the need to support all elements of a young person’s life to enable them to learn and make progress. Person Specification:
• Qualifications within the area of social care
• A good understanding and experience of Hampshire safeguarding thresholds and procedures.
• Understanding and experience of attending Child Protection and Child in Need meetings with other agencies, led by social care.
• Understanding and experience of the Early Help referral process
• Excellent verbal communication skills
• Supportive of young people and their families to gain the best outcomes for the students
• Excellent writing skills and be able to articulate the needs of the young people and their family to enable them to get the best support possible.
• Team Player
• Ability to build relationships with students with special needs and their families
• An understanding of the need for confidentiality in regards to the business of the school and child protection and safeguarding concerns.
• Good organisational skills.
• The ability to hold others to account as required for the good of the young people that attend the school.
Responsibilities:
• Attend Child in Need, Child Protection and Early Help Meetings
• Liaise with staff and parents about individual student needs in regards to safeguarding and child protection.
• Prepare conference reports.
• Update, maintain and improve the use of the ‘My Concern’ safeguarding database.
• Audit staff use of the Safeguarding database ensuring all can sign in and use the system efficiently.
• Provide whole staff safeguarding and child protection training.
• Participate in the annual safeguarding and child protection audit with the headteacher and school governors.
• Ensure the transfer in and out of safeguarding and child protection notes for students joining and leaving the school.
• Support transition of students with safeguarding and child protection needs entering and exiting the school through liaison with the DSL from the feeder/destination setting.
• Share information as required with the whole staff team to support individual young people, aid their learning and ensure their primary needs are met.
• Liaise with other DSLs within the school and ensure information is passed to ensure all students are kept safe at all times.
• Update the school Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy in line with the Local Authorities model policy and disseminate to staff following approval of governors.
• Produce and annual safeguarding report to governors.
