An opportunity has arisen for a motivated, efficient, and pro-active Personal Adviser in the Leaving Care Service.

The successful applicant will join an existing and stable team of Personal Advisers, specifically providing practical, emotional, social, and financial support to young people both preparing to leave care and those who have left care to enable them to make a successful transition to adulthood and independence.

Objectives of the post.
To work within current legislation, the City Council's vision and the Departments policies and procedures to provide a high-quality service to all Care Leavers who are the responsibility of Derby City Council.

To utilise all support networks available to this group of young people and support and advise not only Care Leavers but those working with Care leavers to enable all their post care needs to be met.

Post Requirements.
You must have substantial experience of direct working with vulnerable groups of young people/ adults. It is desirable that you have a relevant qualification at an NVQ 3 level or above and a commitment to personal development as well as a willingness to undertake relevant training.
You will have a sound knowledge of the Children Act, Leaving care Act 2000, Welfare rights and Housing Legislation.

You will have:
  • a good understanding of the needs of care leavers and the role of the Leaving Care workers in supporting them into adulthood.
  • an understanding of and a commitment to consultation with service users and involving them in personal and service planning.
  • knowledge of relevant Child Protection Procedures
  • the ability to prioritise workload and evaluate effectiveness against agreed personal and service targets.
  • the ability to produce high quality detailed plans and to contribute to assessments.
  • be able to work as part and contribute of a wider multi agency network.
  • the ability to work flexibly and can work alone in the community.
  • good communication and negotiation skills.
  • empathy to the needs of care leavers.
  • the ability to work as a team member, taking responsibility for managing your individual workload.
  • the ability to cope with demanding and stressful situations; deal with crises and challenging behavior, including verbal and physical aggression.
